imagine having to pay your landlord a thank you gift for letting you rent a place. I love a lot about Japanese culture, but that is one thing that turns me off a bit.
Then again, maybe I'm spurned by how egregiously poor a lot of landlords in the US are, and maybe the landlords in Japan are actually respectable and keep the rentals in better shape.

Not only in Japan it's compulsory and work as a habit to step out your shoes or foot wear in India whenever one enters in someone's home.
In between Japan and India has a good geopolitical relation with each other.

We have all those fees and deposits for an apartment in the States too. We also get charged for ware and tare when moving out as well. When I moved out of my townhouse I had the carpets professionally cleaned and they cleaned them again and charged me for the cleaning..

I had this glamorized image of Japan from watching movies. These reality videos look rather impoverished , unattractive, overpriced, overcrowded condition in Japan. Thanks for the reality awakening before I decide to move there.
