I know this video is old but I have a Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF desktop. It has a 3.40 GHz i5-3570 processor. I installed 12GB DDR3, 1TB HDD and GTX 1050Ti LP. Costed me $300 total. Plays Doom in Ultra at 1080p 60fps with Vsync on and Vulkan enabled.

AMD Drivers are heavy...Vulkan interacts directly with hardware... no driver assistance is required... hence faster

People are posting interesting results in the comments so i will post mine, running GTX1070 now along with my 6 core i7 4930k OC'ed to 4.2ghz (could probably push it even more), game runs between 100 to 200 fps on Vulcan (depends on place and action), usually sits around 130fps while in OpenGL 4.5 it was around 80 to 100 fps max. But now is the real kicker, i was recently testing my old R9 290 Tri-X OC from Sapphire, from a Graphics card that struggled to keep 60 fps on release in OpenGL 4.5 i've got gains to minimum of 90 fps to maximum of 170 on Vulcan. Basically the same PC just different GPU's, was shocked how good Vulcan is for AMD.

Correction: On no nvidia cards does vulkan give any fps boost. It's only noticeable at 1080p as the game is somewhat bottlenecked by the cpu.

as well, Vulcan is just in version 1.0.8, but OpenGL is in 4.5 version, so OpenGL is more optimized as well. But when newer versions of Vulcan will come out, it will actually be better. Just imagine if it would not run on OpenGL 4.5, but on openGL 2.0 for example , it would be unplayable, so i would give Vulcan some time till it is optimized and run it again. maybe in V1.2 instead of V1.0.8 or something like that can be enough.

hey 860m here, vulkan made a significant boost on my laptop, it is able to run at no resolution down scaling, low settings 1080p w/vertical sync at constant (or close to constant) 60 fps. I have noticed that mobile versions of nvidia cards seemed to do a lot worst using opengl on first day of launch which might be interesting to explore.

edit: you already knew that and I wasted this comment for nothing.
vulkan is undoubtedly better than openGL but it's BETTER because it takes advantage of hardware features that mostly are not in nvidia hardware. Doom also requires no AA or TSAA to see any improvement because...apparently not doing that turns off the improvements.
There's also less cpu usage, but nvidia gpu's have very tweaked drivers and some hardware sacrifices to get cpu use minimized in DX11.
Basically, your video card is entirely optimized for DX11 and to some extension OpenGL so it's no surprise there's no improvement.

Maybe Vulkan helps more if you have more than 2GB of video ram or more than 4 CPU cores available or a combination of both. It seems like I gained some speed where my system has a 980 with 4GB of video ram, and my CPU is an old phenom ii but it has 6 cores.

Alright, let me try my hand at trying to sell you a game comparison. Earth Defense Force 4.1, on the PS4 and PC. The PC version was released just a short while ago (Jul 18th, 8PM PDT), while the PS4 version is about a year old at this point, US version launched at Dec 2015, EU Feb 2016. Still a fairly recent port by Japanese standards. PC version also natively supports 4K resolution, so maybe the Potato Masher could run it at that res?

As for the game? It's basically a B-Movie in video game form, where you have to defend earth (of course) from giant insects, spiders, and even robots in some stages. It is a third person shooter that is best described as 'Starship Troopers meets Dynasty Warriors with Red Faction destruction." Bear in mind the game is still very fresh, and it has some kinks here and there, but they may be ironed out at a later date. Also, the game is currently on sale for 35 bucks on Steam, and will go on until July 25th!

From the Steam page - "Vulkan is not currently supported on NVIDIA GPUs with 2 GB of RAM on Windows 7 or on the GTX 690. Users with these GPUs need to run DOOM on the OpenGL graphics API. "

So maybe that was bogging down the performance on the potato masher? My 960 2 GB's performance got hit pretty hard in some areas whereas openGL breezes through them most of the time.

Edit: NM I got my answer reading the comments below.

well even a 970 wouldn't scale with vulcan at all sadly because of the async compute support Bieng poor on the 9xx generation but on the 10xx series it's acceptable but no where near the polaris architecture so it isn't much the Api's fault not the cards nor is it really nvidia or Amd since most devs run on dx11 and still barely want to touch any new technology
hence not much demand so why support that
then again nvidia aren't going to give up thier cash cow anytime soon since the current compute tech is used by alot of other programs like adobe premier and 3dsmax i-ray

not to defend nvidia or amd but that really sucks I was looking forward for dx12 and vulcan to finally be free of the stupid windows monopoly

guess devs and nvidia aren't braving the move yet and it's sad really I'm concerned that the 1070 may lose fast to polaris hence the bad scaling on dx12 and vulcan

this issue is due to nvidia supporting async compute on a software level which introduces limitations and overhead unlike Amd which had Async embedded in thier architecture core long ago darn I was really looking forward to a 1070 but now I'm hesitant also the founders edition price didn't help that card too since non reference cards are better then why should they be priced lower which makes sense but come it's unfair they can't control this crap price goudging fiasco

I guess we better wait on polaris cuz I can't justify paying an extra 100$ for a non reference model

such a nice card really but knowing it's price might magically drop when polaris arrives makes me hesitant to invest in nvidia this generation :/

Dude, it is a GTX 760. A Kepler card, those are forsaken by Nvidia. The fact it does not lose performance is... impressive.

Kepler and Maxwell = Planned Obsolescence. Dont expect them to gain much (bar in CPU limited scenarios) in DX12/Vulkan.

It remains to be seen whether Pascal is like that (probably is).
