Canon R5 vs Canon R6 Mark II / 4k tests, Low Light, and Focus tracking

Glad I watched this. I’ve had the r6 mark ii for around a year now and the image quality for stills is absolutely superb. I shoot wildlife and the eyes on the subjects are perfectly shaped, glossy, crystal clear, smooth and just beautiful. I’m just starting to use the video but I’m lost with all this Clog stuff. I use Lightroom to edit stills but it’s not much good for editing video. If anyone has any Apps for editing Clog video I’d be grateful. Would be great if they were free or relatively cheap to buy.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice the difference in the noises. The R5 seemed to me not to lag behind the R6 mark 2. Is it the same for everyone? I turned on 4k video quality and watched on a 4k monitor. I don't see the difference, no matter how hard I try

Great stuff here. I've used Canon DSLRs since 2003, and have never really thought about moving to mirrorless. But I find myself getting more and more tempted to add the R62 to my bag. I'm starting to think I'm going to take the plunge, perhaps in the new year.

In my opinion the focus should not be on video performance. For professional videos there are much better options to buy, eg. Canon XA-series. R5 and R6ii are especially for taking pictures!

2 excellent cameras but both overpriced. I have the Canon 2000D at about £400 in the UK. It's almost impossible to tell the difference in photo quality. I don't need all the whistles and bells.

In many ways I think the R6-Mk-II is better than the R5, but rumors are flying that there is an R5 Mk-II coming that's expected to have a stacked sensor like the R3 and many other goodies making it "near flagship" as the world prepares for the R1.

Hi Alex, I want to do an upgrade for my canon 550D I’m not a professional photographer still learning. I want to do pet photography and landscaping, wildlife as well. I was thinking about 90D but it’s not full frame, then I thought about 5D mark IV and it’s very heavy for my hands to be honest though it’s a good camera. I never used a mirrorless and it will be a big change for me I know that the future probably with mirrorless cameras for sure. I can’t afford R5 unfortunately but thinking about R6 … please let me know what would you recommend? thank you 🙏🏻☺️

This was very helpful. Thank you. I’m a Nikon user and I currently possess the Nikon D800 E and two Nikon D 500s. I’ve been happy with my camera equipment but now that I’m getting into cinematography the auto focus tracking on Nikon is not as good as Canon and I was checking out the EOSR which I’m considering getting however, I’m not crazy about that having a one memory card slot so I was questioning if I should get the are five or six however, I don’t want 45 megapixel and from your comparison of the R6 mark two in low light conditions and the sharpness I will most likely be going with the Mark II R6 and when I’m ready selling my Nikon’s equipment to switch over to Canon.

R6 mk2 is a better option right now in 2023 than R5. Only if u need to crop a lot go R5

Iam seeing the r6 m2 vs r5 how the marketing of the 2 is leaning toward the r6 its like canon is paying off the r5 people to switch to the r6. Just wondering for a friend 😊😊😊

The 40 FPS elecotrnic shutter got me. I just ordered the R6MK2 half an hour ago with an extra battery. The fact that it has a newer sensor with greater read-out speed, 40 FPS in elec and has better thermals .. I had to submit

the r6ii is absolutely and definitively sh1te in low light focusing. Did an dancing event and could not hit the mark most of the time, which is embarrassing for a paid gig. Had to revert to the 5diii I had luckily brought along and THAT worked better. And yes, I tried different AF modes etc and was on case 2.

I really like my Canon R6 mark11. Tracking the eyes and quality of pictures in different lighting are the best. My poor Canon 5dmark iv is setting in case.

The tracking on the R6 ii is absurdly amazing.

I have had all of the 5 series, then switched over to R. Have had all of those as well. Currently, I have the R5 and R6 and absolutely love the R6. It is my go to more often than the R5 - when I do not need those extra MPs. I have been considering switching the R5 for the R6M2 and that story continues. Difficult to make the decision. The seldom times I use the 45MP sensor are for landscape images or weddings (outdoor). But even a wedding these days does not require a massive sensor. There are options within LR and PS that will allow you to double an image size - almost as good as a large sensor image.

Is this video supposed to convince me? Ok I'm convinced.

Or do you have to record the full 6K output feed?

We would like to save space, by recording a 4k downsampled ProRes Raw or ProRes 422.

R6ii DR is 12 stops at best which is pushing me towards Lumix S5ii

I own an 7dII and a 5dIII. I disliked the R-Series except the R5. But now the R6II seems to be perfect. For wildlife I'd prefer 32 MP. Now I'm unsure which one to replace. I like the full frame of the 5dIII but also the crop and the AF points of the 7dII.

How would the low light video capabilities compare to a Sony A7IIII?

Thanks for doing this video. I've been using the R5 and in low light scenarios the autofocus is not good. I was curious when it came to photos in low light scenarios, like the reception, or concert, what is the autofocus like for photography on the R6 mark 2?

For someone slightly more video focused over photo, would you go used Canon 5 or canon R6 II?

The R5 does have better 4K than 6DMKII. R5 can do 4K ALL I & 4K HQ and yes 4K 120.
I own the first R6 & the R5.. my buddy just got the R6II.
The R6ii does have solid 4k & is technically everything I wish the first R6 was..
The R6ii will be better than the R5 in low light which I'd what I use my R6 for now. I will be upgrading from the R6 to the R6ii.. whenever stores Have it in stock again
I really love having both.
I'm looking forward to the R5II.. If the rumors are correct, I'll be buying that too.

Is R6 MkII a worthy upgrade to the R6 is the question I have.... wondering if the lower MP R6 sensor will beat the new one in low light.

That’s a really helpful review, Alex. I just bought the R6ii and agree. Low light is great and the slow motion much better than in the preproduction models. First I thought I should get the R5C as a b cam for the C70 but now I am happy about the R6ii especially because of the great battery life. But would you say the oversampled codecs of the R5C in 4k are still much superior to the the 4k of the R6ii?

Does the new R6 overheat?

The deal breaker for me is not having a full size HDMI port. Tired of the problems I've had with my existing camera. Haw do you deal with that, do you use an external monitor? Thanks for the video.

I have the R5 and use it mostly for wildlife and landscapes, the 45mp makes a huge difference then. Am thinking of getting the R6 II for a backup and low light. It's pretty simple the lower the mp the better the low light, always been that way. The higher the mp the more you can crop that 500mm, 600mm shot.

Going to keep my R5 but definitely selling my R61 and picking up the R62

4K60 on the R6 mark I isn't pixel binned either, this option was always better than the R5. The R5C though isn't pixel binned only R5

Thanks for a very interesting video. It sounds like your conclusion, so far, is that the R5 isn't worth the extra money, unless you intend to do a lot of cropping (in stills), and you need the megapixels. Is that right?

Just picked up my R6 MK2 this past Tuesday. Quite enjoying it so far and coming from a 5D MK4 which I still have as well.

Here in Canada the R6 II is $3200 and the R5 is $5200.
I really like the body on the R5 much more (and the R) vs the R6/II. But is it worth $2000? It's really hard to justify.

can I shoot 4k hq in the r6 2? I love the hq on the r5 its son sharp when you zoom, but according to you the the r6 mark 2 is sharper than the r5 hq 4k, is it correct?
