This channel is so bad. Laserdisc was not a flop. Laserdisc was not digital video.

With 4k and 8k tvs, they should bring 3d back. The new tvs are so much brighter. Love my 3d on my jvc projector with a 106 inch screen. The movies are fading, they are making less and they will soon be gone.

Widescreen CRTs we’re very popular in the UK, just about everyone had one, probably because the main networks here all pretty much switched to 16:9 ratio as soon as digital TV launched in the late 90s.

Right off the bat he makes a mistake. Laserdisc was analog.

VHS could make longer recordings.
Which, if you think about the average football game was very useful. Beta first did around 60 Minutes, VHS? That kicked the door in at 90.
And as tape got thinner and longer, and recording speeds could be adjusted VHS simply had more tape... so longer recordings.
Fun fact about VHS, few actually OWNED a VHS player. Many rented them... so they rented both the player and the tapes. Genius isn't it?

3d failed because it was expensive. That's it. I avoided those like those damn smart tvs.

There was also DIVX, a DVD-based service that you could pay less per DIVX disc, but pay more fees for more hours watching it. There was also Flexplay, which essentially was a DVD that decayed itself overtime. Both of these dumb tech fails are also on Horrible TVTropes, which is also how I heard of it.

Isn't OLED a fail too? It restricts you from using it for very long sessions, and watch 1 thing all the time. Yes, I'm talking about image burn in / image retention, which makes your TV a paper weight for long term use!
The future should be Quantum Dot and Nano Cell TVs, with Corsair's Micro LEDs.

I think you are hinting that the porn industry drove VHS success, but that isn't completey true. One of the reasons VHS was used was because of the movie industry. They specifically wanted it because it looked worse. They were worried if it looked too good people would quit going to the movies and watch at home instead. Now look where we are lol. You are correct though, porn does drive a lot of the emerging tech like DVD and the internet. Also rear projection tv's were not that hard to adjust, I had one. Maybe in the very beginning but it didn't take long for them to build it into the tv menu. And I only had to do it if I moved the tv around or something. Their biggest issue was they were huge, didn't really look all that great, didn't handle ambient light that well and could suffer from burn in as well. Plasma actually looked better and was a lot more sleek. Not that all projection tvs looked bad, some were pretty good. Also the prices never made it to the point to where they were affordable. My 50 some inch rptv was HUGE and cost 3K. My first 55 inch lcd tv was light enough you could carry it around and was like 7 or 8 hundred dollars. Then again in the late 90's early 2000 there will still 36 inch crt tvs that cost thousands. The market was all over the place really.

In fairness you could say blu Ray is a failure it has never hit off the same as DVD did. Especially since streaming started to become a serious thing.

Muse (HD laserdiscs) were released in 91, and the DTS bitrate for normal LD`s was much higher than on DVD´s.

I was part of the LaserDisc start up companies. Correction it was analog video and eventually PCM audio. Also, LaserDisc and VHS/Beta were both competing for customers in the new home video market. The consumer was faced with spending the same amount of money for a LaserDisc player and a VHS/Beta machine BUT the VHS/Beta let you record off air and also buy pre-recorded movies. The other major concern was distribution. DiscoVision Associates made the discs and Magnavox mad the consumer players. Pioneer joined the LaserDisc band wagon with players and replication which helped but there were also two competitive disc formats...RCA Selectavision and JVC VHD and AHD both using a stylus pickup rather than a laser. Discs were easier to manufacture but there was some deterioration and wear over time. RCA had the best shot at the consumer since they made the players, discs and TV sets. But the VHS/Beta machines were just to tempting and plummeted in price over a very short period of time. LaserDisc manufacturing last about 25 years but was never the consumer success we all suspected.

VHS didn't win the tape war cause of VHS allowing porn and Betamax not allowing it. It's a popular myth. Technology connections made a great video about it!
