There’s a lot of shite out there in Hollywood. But every now and again a gem appears, the directors cut version. I tend to wait for director or Final Cut movies rather than the theatre ones. (If they release them)

There are so many books turned into movies or even series that are butchered by film studios/makers that in this day and age need to be stopped. The world has hopefully moved on from this practice.

they are two different films, the son dynamic completely changes the story and adds a layer that suddenly makes the whole film extremely complex in human dynamics and politics. The film is a masterpiece, as Balian grows as a character, his comfortable old world comes tumbling down. Also there is a connection with the master gravedigger from the opening scenes that are improved in the director’s cut, so by the time Balian makes new knights from the civilian men of jerusalem in his “rise a knight” speech (the master gravedigger from France being one of the civilians present) it carries a ton of emotion in that speech. My mom was crying, whereas she’s seem the theatrical version many times and never cried. It’s a tragedy that the studio cut down the full vision.

It's definitely better. Whole other movie. Totally worth it, who ever took the decision to slaughter it for the theatrical version, made a huge mistake.

The only critique I have of the directors cut is it gives the audience the full information about what a scumbag both Guy and Reynolds are, so the audience is clammoring for his execution for treason and murder but it isnt quite clear that that information isnt available to Balian or King Baldwin to justify executing them regardless of the succession crisis

I dont see how the Director's cut is any better. Does it fix the major problems ? No Bailin is still a blacksmith and a Bastard that rises to lord, master of tactics and agricultural practices in a couple of weeks. You cant make him a Marry Sue and a fish out of water at the same time. Also on side is completely vilanized . The history is all over the place too . Typical for a Ridley film.

My problem with Kingdom of Heaven is that it makes the crusaders seems like barbarous warmongers that just want to kill innocent people, while making the Muslims seem like peaceful, just, enlightened people that just want the marauding Christians to stop killing innocent people. I'm not even religious but there is certainly an anti-Christian and even anti-western theme to the movie that is pretty prevalent in Hollywood, even back then.

Still love this movie though.

I enjoyed the film and watched it several times…I was thrilled to see cut film. I thought the 6 large siege towers was a bit overdone.
Discussing film with others I find unless you have read your history most viewers don’t understand the different factions. They are confused early in film 😮

I'm not sure how you can say that having a man insult you saying: "No-one in this village wants you here, I tell you as your priest go to Jerusalem and pray for your wife's soul in hell. She is in hell as she was a suicide, but what she does there without her head I do not know," constitutes that the murder is invalid and unjustified. He stole from the dead, chopped off this woman's head who had just killed herself after losing her child, then went to the husband and openly insulted her, stomped on his grief (the structure of the film makes it seem it happened within the week), and told him he wasn't welcome in his (likely) childhood home, while wearing the cross he stole from this man's wife. I'd say that those reasons above would be enough for me personally and most men to act out in rage and fury.

This film does a hatchet job on the Templars, doesn’t seem to represent the Christians in any way other than the “ bad” guys and lifts up the Muslim forces. It’s historically inaccurate and is ideologically motivated to bash Christianity.

It was a simple money calculation. Rather than put the longer version of the film and risk making less money as a result they decided to release the inferior version to maximize profits from theatrical release and then double dip in the home market with the directors cut. Ironically, they would've made more money by trusting Scott and releasing the complete film in theatres where it would have been better received and still made good money from DVD sales afterwards as well. Again just bad decisions made by producers getting scared about losing money. Typical hollywood.

This movie is terrible. Balian de Ibelin was a real person. He was born in the Holy Land. Why make up some bs story. He was also married to Maria Komnene, who was previously Queen of Jerusalem. He couldn't stand either Sibylla or Guy, they usurped the throne.

Balian's life was far more interesting than what they made up. They did get his defense of Jerusalem and negotiations with Saladin correct. BUT, he was also at the Battle of Hattin with Guy and the entire army of Jerusalem. The idiot Guy made a huge error and got almost everyone killed.

He did do a great job with costumes and battle scenes. I got to hand him praise for that.

I was so excited to watch the directors cut because of all the hype around it, but goddam this movie was so fucking boring, and sags so hard in the middle. Talk about predating the preachy hollywood idealogy of the 2010s man. No respect for historical context, just Ridley Scott’s personal opinions on the crusades based of what i can only assume was him reading the big names of the 3rd crusade, cuz goddam, names are all that we have to even call this remotley a historical movie, and his personal opinions on christianity. Its gladiator with a bad script, and too many opinions
