Don't know why this was in my recommended but it's very interesting! Also I'd love to know what tune you're playing. It reminds me of "Lullaby for Jesse" by Frederic Devresse and Daniel Blumenthal.

I tune, and I think this is a very good tuning. For those that are mixing thoughts of what are aural tunings, tuning your temperament, fifths and fourths, listening for beats, (tests of 3rds and sixes) etc., things are different using an ETD. An ETD will measure the inharmonicity and calculate the tuning. It's really hard to beat. The best way to check is in the end. If you can play, which this guy does very well, that will speak volumes about the tuning. Great job!

I think it is a wrong tuning method. Where is 12 equal temperament ?

sounded like a nice upright piano to a fine concert grand piano. Well done. I wonder how people in the past did it all by ear. 👂

This style of tuning would not make on a concert stage. The piano is still out of tune. I would call this a pitch raise. ETD's as sophisticated as they've become are still no match for the human ear hearing and comparing and checking beat rates to temper the piano. Inharmonicty in piano wires does not impeade this process.

So...Did you tune all the notes in equal temperament with a tuner? No streching octaves? :-) Thank you

I think using both methods can help with tuning sometimes the electronic aids just don't compare with the beat methods. Every piano is different even the same model, make and even if the serial number is one unit different.

I had a piano tuner in my teen years tune my 50 plus year old upright concert grand and it blew away many baby grands and even concert grands in sound quality. Some old-school tuners were the best. He tuned pianos from all the colleges and universities in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania.

My piano was almost a whole step flat and the pins on the ribs had rust along with the strings. The tuner detuned the notes to break the rust bond before raising the pitch. His thinking was the piano was not going to get any younger so he rsised the pitch to A 440hz. Over a few years some notes slipped but not enough to hear to most people. My mom had perfect pitch so she could tell. She also knew the piano tuner we had in Pennsylvania was far better than the one we had in Florida. Both were old-school piano tuners.

I won't knock the new tuning methods because some people cannot hear the beats so the instrument helps.

I have a Hale sight o tuner but I'm thinking of getting it upgraded. I I'm a hobby piano restorer and i think the aid would help me hear the beats. I could hear the beats when I tuned the college harpsichord. Pianos have 3 times the strings counting the three strings and the extra octaves.

If you have to rely on a machine, you're a dabbler or amateur. People who have learnt their craft with a 5 year apprenticeship and then more years honing their skills, tuning authentically by ear are unbeatable. People on here saying it's a good tuning are not really qualified to say so, they mean it sounds 'nice'. This guy's tuning method really wouldn't stand up to a concert pianist bashing out a piano concerto, they'd have to stop the concert. Concert tuning really sorts the genuine from the imposters!

Tuning a concert piano such as this one is a painstaking process! Wow. But I have a couple of questions for you: Quite often during the warmer months, symphony orchestras have evening outdoor performances in an amphitheater, for example. Do both the ambient temperature and relative humidity at the venue affect the tuning of the piano? How many hours prior to a performance does the piano get tuned? Sorry for rambling. 🎹🎼

I'm very interested in pursuing piano technician as a career and, more immediately, getting jobs tuning pianos in my area. I have no technical experience working on a piano but I've been singing my entire life, playing piano for 7 years and have a TON of ear/pitch training. Do you think I would have a head-start in a career like this? What would you recommend I do or look into to start working as a piano tuner? Thanks!

Sounds great! I’m new in the piano tuning and I have a question that may be too basic: is it better to tune with a software guiding the process or by ear? Normally people answer that’s preferable to tune with our own ear, as we shouldn’t tune perfect 5th and 4ths, and eventually to use the software only for the beginning or only for the first key. I ask this question because I see you using the software for all the keys and the result seems pretty good.

Sorry to say this, but this is not tuning! All those tuning programs sure have gotten better over the years, and they produce kind of OK results. But for concert piano this is not great! Those electronic tuners cant really pick up on the beats. Sure, can you use this apps to see how far off you are (cents sharp/flat), but the tuning and listening for the beats has to be by ear imo.

I watched this video maybe 2 years ago. I found it fascinating but I didn't really hear the "out" notes that well because I usually watch videos well after midnight and can't turn the volume up. Now I've watched it with the volume way up and everything is much more clear.
It must be good to be tall and sit. I'm only 5' 6 1/4". I usually stand. Love tuning, the standing, not so much.
