You can't blame Putin because the authorities in Transnistria did not call citizens to vote in this referendum.

If Russia wanted to it could mobilise more than a 100,000 Moldovan passport holders in Transnistria to vote and completely tip the balance.

Instead those who voted in Transnistria were less than 15,000 (slightly more than 10% of eligible voters) and almost 35% of them voted to join the EU !

A firm majority of people in Moldova voted NO to joining the EU in the latest referendum.

The YES vote won by a tiny majority of 11,000 votes (YES ; 50.38% NO ; 49.62%) because of the 1,488,874 valid votes cast a whopping 235,503 votes came from Moldovan passport holders residing abroad (mainly in Europe and North America).

The YES vote among the voters abroad was 80% which is not at all representitive of the mood in Moldova.

Tens of thousands of these Moldovan passport holders abroad are not even Moldovan - they are Ukrainian catholics who became Moldovan citizens in the last decade solely for the purpose of influencing elections in Moldova.

Any person with ancestry from the Soviet Union can get Moldovan citizenship by either presenting a document that proves one of his great grandparents or one of his grandparents was born or lived in Moldova

If no such document exists a short declaration that so and so ancestor hailed from Moldova is written and if found convicing by the Moldovan ministry of interior the person gets his/her citizenship !

Still everything depends on the credibility of Europe support for NATO in Ukraine 🇺🇦. If eu/nato gets wobbly? Then Ukraine fails.
