You called for a boycott of the game because Kabam had changed the meta without warning and didn’t offer players any compensation. Your reasoning is that players had invested in ranking specific champions based on the existing meta. This is fair; players should have some kind of insurance that what they purchase will retain its value.

You also called for the elimination of heath potions, revives, and boosts. Your reasoning is that their availability fosters an environment wherein players can “pay to win” and gain an advantage. This is also an accurate observation; in a game that pits players against one another’s, the availability of “power ups” for purchase does create an unfair situation for those who can afford them.

Here is the problem. If the value of upgrades already made to champs is retained, and potions and boosts are eliminated from Alliance Wars, as well, then the playing field is remains biased toward those who purchased the resources to upgrade their champions. That is to say, if Player X purchases a Rank Up package for his or her champion, and the value of the package is (rightfully) retained, then the use of Alliance War items may be Player Y’s only chance of defeating said champion. Even with those items, the odds may be stacked against Player Y. And, Player Z, who is Free-to-Play is, therefore, at any even greater disadvantage.

Kabam‘s intent in changing the meta was to level the playing field; however, ultimately, those who spend the most will still be able to adapt to those changes more readily. Thus, nothing really changes in any meaningful way in the long run. The only real way to address a “pay to win” environment is to not have one in the first place, in which case, the only items available for purchase would be cosmetic changes: palette swaps, reskins, and the like, that have no bearing on actual gameplay. Sadly, this cannot be done retroactively without causing a massive backlash.
