Watching this on 6,5 year old phone 👍
Only obsolescence i have witnessed is the forced obsolescence by ecofascists who want me to buy new electric car instead of letting me drive the 26 year old one that runs without any problems, because it "RuInS tHe EnViOrMenT".

Watching this from my $250 Nokia phone I have had since just after 4G came out, and I have nearly all of the types of features the next to last iPhone had with a pretty great camera to boot. I own 3 iPhones though, I get them second hand and use them on Wi-Fi for different light computing tasks to make a little money, the oldest is a 5 series, and the batteries are still in great shape because I don't let them ever get below 40% (same with my Nokia).
There are many reasons to hate the obsolescence built in by most companies, and I do. I know batteries are a solid failure point on electronics and have learned to optimize their care, but I do this with every electronic and mechanical thing I own. It takes very little time to learn how to care for things you purchase, and I think we need to also do that as a society. When you value your money, you value the things it can buy and act accordingly.
Don't get me wrong here, there is a massive need to hold the companies collective feet to the fire. I support right to repair legislation, will not buy a Tesla at any time until there is third party repair available, which is why I have never bought an iPhone or Apple product new or for more than $20. The best pair of headphones I have ever owned have ended up in the wash and dryer 2 times now and still sound as good as the day I bought them for $15, which was around 10 years ago (a tangle free non name brand, which i have definitely gotten my money's worth out of).
I constantly tell my fiancé "Don't buy hype", and that mantra has slowly been adopted by her, as I have shown her how to spot quality items and compare options.

unfortunate that on such an important topic, the first example first moments of this video, is unreliable and likely a bad example of misinterpretation, to put it charitably
Most likely popularised by the also unreliable Veritasium

There actually is a core principle about lightbulbs and it actually simply has more to do with physics and material science and electricity etc. than conspiracy
It has to do with the balance and ratio of longevity (voltage and burn rate) and light quality (luminosity and spectroscopy relating to emission spectrum wavelength and such as the range that's more similar to sunlight or would be more comfortable or easier on the eyes etc.)
As it's actually it's about optimal for the lightbulbs to have a specific range of relative optimal peak performance
As to increase longevity it, the materials of the filaments inside would have to burn less bright and therefore a dim poorer quality lightbulb that's bad at being a light source

You can also think of in the way that, how even to this day, with all the advancements, the lightbulbs still have the same similar if not exact hours longevity rating for the filaments and bulbs based on the same technology a/o similar materials; and that there's no company or new industry disruptors to suddenly come out with the same type of lightbulbs with similar properties suddenly lasting way way longer; because it has to also abide by the same laws of physics

A good rule of thumb is to only buy used items that were used for a decade or so. If they worked for the last 10 years and works well as they used in the past, chances are they'll still work in the future.

The biggest example I know are shoes. My grandfather had a pair that was over 20 years old that he wore every day. Apart from the shoe lace and a few minor scratches it was completly fine. My pair of 80€ hiking boots on the other hand had the sole split and I mean completly split and pierced by a small pebble. I didnt hike once in them. They were unusable. This was when it hit me

The other thing with tech is that its computing power becomes rather weak after some time. Old phones are laggier than new ones and cannot run a lot of the newer apps. Purchasing new ones isn't just to do with them breaking down, but obviously such a thing does happen.

So we’re not gonna talk about how the only reason companies like Apple go uncontested is because of Chinese labor, patent lawsuits and tax evasion? All problems more with the government than capitalism. You always whine about capitalism but don’t seem to understand it. I enjoy your content and the perspective you offer, but it often comes across like you misunderstand certain systems and the cause for a lot of issues.

You showed the wrong prices when you were talking about iPhone battery replacements. They actually cost less than 100€ (idk about USD) in most cases. To replace the battery in the flagship models costs 110€. Otherwise great video. (And no, I don‘t think it being cheaper than you showed in the video is an excuse for Apple, it‘s still scummy and if they cared about the environment as much as they claimed around the time they removed the charging brick from all iPhone boxes, they would offer battery replacements for free for as long as the device is supported and received iOS updates)

If Capitalism is not sustainable then it's just consuming with an expiration date. This is exactly why we are in the situation we are in.. plow through resources and charge more when there is less. The people who thought this in to reality have literally ended civilization in due time.

Now free Market is a good thing but planned obsolecence is actually froud and shuld be treated as such. We need a cultur of making things last and fix em if needed.
