That version of the "self" is more or less how I've come to see myself after many quiet nights of introspection

Amazing how Zen and Stoicism, from different parts of the world, converge on the path to inner peace and wisdom. Both emphasize living in the present, self-mastery, and practicality in their own unique ways. Truly, timeless wisdom knows no boundaries.

I think that the point of a lack of "self" is to be able to let go of ideas that you previously identified with and take on new ones that make more sense. So many people are threatened by a fact that contradicts something they have taken to heart (i.e. incorporated as part of the "self").

The deabte of the self and non self has been going on for a while, and btw the side for the self has very good arguments againest the non self. a lot of buddhists approach this debate almost with this egoistic approach to why they are right. Many though don't take this with much context which there is plenty and if you miss out on it you'll surely be stuck in that debate forever. First the Buddhas oringinal teachings had been changed over time and while the concepts had been passed forward the context of them had changed immensely. ultimately at the lvl of words things will contradict but at the expirence lvl they join.

I am a 53-year-old American citizen living in Japan and have been a ZEN monk for over 10 years. I enjoyed your commentary on ZEN, thought it was pretty funny. But I think you miss guide your listeners and a couple of key points. First of all, there are two forms of CEN and you mix them both together, but they are distinct and separate. Another is that you talk about the Zen masters. I’ll tell you now that there is no such thing as a Zen master. How can I say that for sure? I speak Japanese and there is no term for a master of Buddhism. He also said these so-called masters don’t take themselves seriously. Actually, they do take themselves seriously, very seriously! they are some of the most prideful, arrogant and self-righteous people I’ve ever met. I would say 99% of the monks here in Japan are only in it for the money. Yes. It’s a big business here in Japan!
Anyway, funny video, gave you a thumbs up!

QUESTION: If the root of suffering is attachment and “sudden enlightenment” can happen, should you not even be attached to enlightenment as a concept as it is always fleeting?

I think there is a inner core in people that is there from birth. Yes our birthplace decides the language we learn and religion and culture but not our base I think that’s there from birth. There’s a stroy of two brothers with an alcoholic dad. When they’re in their 30’s they’re interviewed. One brother was a drunk and the other was not. When asked why they thought they were the way they were they had the same answer my dad was an alcoholic.

I am a vocal advocate for all psychedelics, but LSD is a constant in my creative toolbox. I purchase by the sheet and have been known to drop a couple tabs and paint while listening to Watts or Ram Dass lectures. I'm writing a book and was doing research. I comment on maybe four videos a year, but it's not every day that you see a video summary that speaks so directly to you!
When I discovered Watts I immediately realized my understanding of Taoism and Buddhism was not as deep as I once thought, but it did not take long to realize that it was so consistent with my worldview that I may be pathologically disposed to their philosophical traditions. I was all in when I realized the ideologies I embraced that I found in punk rock coexisted nicely as well.

Come to think of it I believe I once told someone while tripping balls that Watts was my spirit animal.

This is kind of incorrect. The “self” being referred to is the atman, or soul. It is said to be beyond the mind. It isn’t what produces the thought, it is what is aware of the thought, and everything else for that matter. The brahmins at that time believed that this “self” was a permanent unchanging entity. Buddha refuted that and said that awareness, or consciousness, was connected to everything else in the world.

Since my dad is Cambodian and knows a lot of stories, I’m gonna share with you guys.
So there was a guy who wanted power and 100 fingers on his necklace (necklace I’m pretty sure) so right now he has 90,
And the last person is buddha, so he chases buddha and buddha keeps running and the guy hungry for power yells stops. The buddha says,” I have already stopped but you havent.” The guy hungry for power is confused but he stops. Later the guy is the best monk at the time. The end.:)
Moral: Is the Buddha is doing good but the other guy isn’t 😂
