Thank you for this interview with Prof Miller. Listening to him speak about MI is validating some concerns that I had about the practice. As part of waiver training for buprenorphine prescribing, there were several sections regarding MI, but their teachings sounded manipulative and not empathetic, and I was really turned off by the practice. Hearing Prof Miller discuss MI, I think that his method was not being taught well. Now I have a greater motivation to learn more about MI, and I will read more of his work, and also dig deeper into Rogers.

I appreciated this video. A genuine discussion on motivational interviewing. Your demeanor & how relaxed you are really reasonated with me. I have learned that being a good listener means to have those pauses, being relaxed/comfortable in having conversation, its body language and overall energy you put out. Your voice is relaxing & your energy is such that I would want to open up to you.

I went to my doctor today. She asked whats been happening. I told her I do therapy. Conversational Hypnosis. The main ingredient is the "hypnotic interview". The central tenants are don't try and fix a client's issue. They have the resources.Second is be curious. The first question is always what's the problem. What they initially tell you is never the problem. The third thing to remember is just ask questions about each response. 4th is look for signs that their unconscious mind is active. Emotion, sighing, blinking, staring off into space, Weird sensations, metaphors used in answering the question... these are all mini inward reflection. A sign of deeper thinking vs nominalized concepts that keep them stuck in the problem. There is a lot of reflecting back to the client when these moments happen. It creates a feedback loop between the client and therapist. This deepens the reflection until the conscious mind slows down to a crawl and the unconscious is more active. That's were the client gets the answers to there issue.

I think we will take MI to new levels when we start incorporating Daniel Kahneman's work on Heuristics into MI. Anchoring, the availability heuristic, loss aversion, etc. There are TONS of research questions that could be investigated. GIVE ME A GRANT! I WANT TO DO THE research!

I used to teach MI at our community college and university in addictions courses back in the 80's & 90's. I have stepped outside of social work/psychology and as a Financial Life Planner focussing on Strategic Philanthropic Planning there is absolute application to the work I now do. Great video thanks so much.

Thank you for developing MI! I've been training in MI online through Hall McMaster & Associates and on the job as a Probation Officer in NZ and it is an amazingly effective skill-set to have.

Can one who has never had any formal training in motivational interviewing(MI) but read books about it and listened to the MI recordings many times use it to help patients adhere to their medications in the health facilities or there are penalties when one uses it without training?

Great to hear Dr. Miller who comes across very humble and likeable. MI has great potential in executive coaching.
