Russian student kills a teacher and a police in school shooting

A Russian student armed with two rifles shot his geography teacher and a policeman dead at School No. 263 in Moscow on Monday morning.

The 10th grade teen, identified as Sergey Gordeyev, hid his guns under a long coat. A school guard attempted to stop him from entering the building but failed. He entered a classroom and, after firing shots at the teacher, held more than 20 students hostage, saying that he was armed with more than 100 bullets, according to the Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin.

The school guard called the police. When the responding police arrived, the teen fired shots at the policemen, wounding one and killing another. He fired at least 11 shots, according to Markin.

The teen talked to his father on the phone for 15 minutes, then his father entered the classroom in a bulletproof vest to persuade his son to surrender.

Moscow police chief Anatoly Yakunin said the suspect began releasing students 30 minutes later.

The teenage is now under police custody and is facing life sentence. Police are investigating his motivations behind the attack.

Former classmates said that Gordeyev was a model student and that teachers liked him. Mr. Markin suggested that he might have suffered an "emotional breakdown." Russian media reported that the tragedy might be a result of the shooter's personal conflict with the geography teacher over his marks.

Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called a review over security systems in Russian schools. Such school shootings are rare in Russia, where terrorist attacks have been a greater concern and security forces are on high alert just four days before the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic.
