Surviving after a layoff can be challenging. I’ve been in the situation where my job search was un-successful for a long period of time. But we have financial responsibilities we must take care of, no matter what.

And there are 6 steps you can take to help cope with the situation:

1. Take care of your finances: Evaluate your expenses, create a budget, and prioritize payments to necessities like housing and food.

2. Seek support: Reach out to family, friends, or support groups for emotional and practical support. There are multiple professional groups on Facebook, Discord, Reddit, etc where people are going through the exact challenges. Remember, you’re not alone!

3. Update your resume and search for new job opportunities: Utilize online job boards, network, and reach out to your professional connections. Make sure to do it ASAP. There are a lot of people who got laid off and received a severance package which allows them to take a couple of months off and distress, but that means that the job market in a couple of months will be over saturated.

4. Upskill and improve your marketability: Consider taking courses or certifications that align with your career goals. It also helps to expand your professional network.

5. Stay positive and focus on self-care: Engage in activities you enjoy, exercise, and maintain a healthy diet to improve your physical and mental well-being.

6. Be open to alternative employment options: Consider freelance work, part-time jobs, or starting your own business.

Remember, it's okay to take the time you need to process your emotions and adjust to the changes, but it's important to stay proactive and focused on your future career goals.
