Sheep people are been scamed cos they all go behind the 30-40 titles influencers dictate. There are hundreds of exclusive epic genesis titles on absolute decent price.

I don't mind the new format and the rant on this new situation. I am not a big collector, but I do have an extreme love for retro games.I recently bought an analogue Mega SG and planned to buy some favorites from my good ol' days. I find out soon after, that this whole situation with artificial inflation and price gouging is going on (I live in the US btw). I was disgusted to know that there are bad people with no interest in the love of games, trying to influence a bubble market.

It's gonna be a situation where genuine game collectors will also have to be investigators and find dirt on those who are gouging the prices on these games and expose them publicly. If only there was a site where ppl like that could be reported with proof provided on their antics...

This whole thing is happening a lot. Its been going on for years, its nothing new, but this massive hike is scary and new!
I've never agreed on buying games for hundreds, even those "rare" games. Its a buyers market and no game is worth those crazy prices. Stop paying silly prices and the prices will soon fall.
I stopped retro collecting quite a few years back when the prices went through the roof. Collecting is not fun these days. Too much focus is put into the price of games rather than which games are cool, or fun to play etc.
Its a real shame as collecting used to be fun and affordable. These days Id rather play via Everdrive carts on old consoles. Or, Ill pick up the odd cheap title if its a good game. - A bad time for collectors for sure.
Also, people using CEX as a price guide makes me mad too. Why have CEX become the go to price guide people? Crazy!
Good interesting video mate nice one.

I reckon that person who sold their entire collection must've make close to £20,000 within the first couple of days from when I had a look at what they had for sale. I remember when Pewdiepie played Conker's Bad Fur Day in 2013 and you had several sellers buying up all the loose cartridges which make the price skyrocket past £100. Unfortunately I can't see myself collecting many more games in the future with the prices going up even for common games which many don't consider very good. With most games going for £20-40+ it might be finally worth investing in a Everdrive cart. But with the prices going up reproductions are getting more common and higher quality where they're almost identical to the real deal; But I wouldn't trust a bootleg cart to either not work or kill my console!

They’re scum Mike! I’ve seen a ridiculous rise in prices on the og Xbox lately. Games which were a couple of quid a few months ago selling for £30-40, games which were £30-40 going for well over £100. There’s no chance it can be just regular market forces.

The business I work at had this problem when it first opened. Mind you the context for it was Magic cards and Pokémon cards. Resellers don’t care about the community or the culture, it’s profit. It’s sad.

This is a great discussion topic Mike and I'm glad you did it. Near the end you mention people buying solely for the purpose of reselling for profit and honestly that does bug me in the sense that it hurts us as collectors in how it inflates the market. Look, if you find a great deal on a game, flip it and put those funds towards your next big purchase, more power to you. But those out there just buying cheap and selling high--for the collectors, it hurts and dings the hobby in my opinion. Arguments can be made but I'm willing to bet that there's something in their lives that they would be awfully pissy about if it suddenly skyrocketed in price, whether it's cars or simply food--something would tick them off so it's not like it's only aimed at one side.

I wonder if the sellers who are knowingly inflating these games make much of a profit at the end of the year. If they buy and sell their product to themselves they still have to pay eBay fees over and over with the hope you'll sell that product down the line, which they may not. Tbh, if I had the Superman game and it was being sold currently for €1200 I'd put my copy up for €800ish. If/when it sells I'd keep €300 for when the price crashes to rebuy it (if available) and use the €500 for other purchases.

Tbh I have very little sympathy for someone paying 3, 4 or 5 times more than what something is worth. If people allow others to say what they should value (as opposed to determining what resonates with them personally) then there will always be occasions where you feel ripped off or unfulfilled because buying that expensive item wont actually satiate any real personal desire you may have. I also have no sympathy for collectors of anything tbh that will pay for something just because it's rare and it's rarely used or appreciated. You see that with classic cars where someone may buy a Ferrari and puts 500 miles on it before garaging the car. So many owners do this that it inflates the price. If people then want to maintain the inflated market by buying them later on then more fool them.

A very interesting subject mate, kudos for the video.
A ridiculous increase that i noticed lately was for the Pocahontas game for the Megadrive from Italian sellers. It is funny to see this game to be triple in price on purpose.
Another thing that we should also mention is shill bidding that for someone that is using Ebay for many years is very easily noticeable, and very common, on many auctions.
On the other hand i must disagree with you on the statement "this is gonna damage our community".
The community is already damaged, many years now. And everything is getting worse as the retrogaming has become so popular the last years with all these intruders-merchants with their ties and suits entering our community.
No one should be paying 500, 800 or 1000 pounds for a game. No game in the world deserves so much money.
No gamer should own graded games on plastic boxes getting dust on shelves.
Everyone should know their limits and boundaries.
I know that i will never spend more than x amount of money for a game as i also know that there are games out there that i will never own on my collection.
I can leave with that.
Keep it up, been checking your videos for a long time but this time i had to comment 😜

@Thunderbird1337
@Thunderbird1337 - 03.12.2021 14:40

Yea all right, BUT isn't that the principle of supply and demand and value determination? Value of something = price that people are willing to pay for it. Sure, there are "scammers" trying to raise prices (although I wouldn't call it scam, they are doing just the same as every company in the world: trying to influence supply and demand to their advantage to max their profit), but still the principle of supply and demand is working. If enough people are willing to pay 1.000€ for a game, then we just have to accept that this game is simply "worth" the 1.000€. Simple as that. Just accept that you can't have every game if you are not willing to pay these astronomical prices.
The advise "don't buy for these prices to reduce the market price" will never work! If people want to have something and are willing to pay the price, they will buy it. Look at prices of PS5, graphics cards etc. People don't renounce to reduce prices. Doesn't work like that.

I just got into Sega now and started my collection, but I refuse to buy rare games, if something is more than £20 it is not going into my "collection", yeah sure, you can say I am not a real collector... and maybe I am not, I enjoy playing this games. Even in this price range, I can see how easy you can overpay if you go into a bidding war on eBay.

Sometimes, I Hope SEGA could reprint all of Mega Drive/Genesis Games(of course including entire CD and 32x games!) for someday so that Mega drive/Genesis Gamers would get scammed no more!
Seriously, I was so happy with SEGA Mega Drive mini2/Genesis mini2 last year, but I also realized that there are other great and masterpiece Genesis games which didn't got reprinted for mini2s.
Talking about SEGA Mega Drive mini2/Genesis mini2, Actually in Japanese SEGA Mega Drive mini2 announcement stream, most were happy with the components of product, while there were some disappointment comments in real time chats.
And the reason was not that they were looked down and disappointed with items in mini2 itself but others which never reprinted from good-tier games to masterpiece games were WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!! Seriously, why you enjoying SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive is there are great SEGA games and 2nd&3rd party games! and as you see, there are so many wrongful scams and unfair resells in retro games especially SEGA Games! and more especially SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis!! Scammers, don't you please ruin my precious nostalgia.

In December 2017 cartridges on their own of Aladdin & Lion King were selling for £15 instantly, now they struggle to sell for £7.... I think it's largely just market fluctuation, I don't doubt some people are doing what you're saying but not on a huge scale. In the lockdowns many people had time and money on their hands and saw retro games as a sound investment, especially with inflation rates of the last year... I had a copy of Pirates of the dark water and sold it for £65 in 2016 :(
