Always funny to me when they say stuff like “Kirk is still wide” when it’s not a super leady part or a solo. Because that is not Kirk lol. James records literally all of the guitar in their songs except for the solos that Kirk does and a few small exceptions like some distinct lead parts, but even then it’s usually still James that records that

On "tape," that is, on the recordings that are not live, ALL guitars are James, left and right. Only designated solo or lead work is Kirk - ON studio recordings.

Dig the video ideas and general duscussions that include engineering specific observations involving imaging, soundstage width/depth (especially with respect to individual instruments & segments of the tracks), BUT as a Metallica fan as well as somebody who understands audio engineering terminology, I REALLY started to say hell yes to the comment in regards to James Hetfield almost always ESSENTIALLY being panned dominantly left live performances too btw but then you completely became factually incorrect when you continued and said "Kirk always on the right"...... NOPE! Lead harmonies, sure. Solos in general, depends (if not dead center.) BUT RHYTHM aka riffs.....ALMOST NEVER. Part of the beauty of what makes Metallica's tight rhythm section or "wall of sound," is just that. It's a triple-tracked wall of sound that is ALWAYS, other than certain Death Magnetic & St. Anger tracks(even then still predominantly...), James Hetfield & James Hetfield ONLY. He's very particular about his rhythm tones and having a very tight riff section sonically, especially since he is a natural at having an almost robotic right hand in layering guitar tracks that stack together CLEANLY, panned or not, in the studio. And yes, they have been known to even use danpening blankets over the cabs and several close proximity mics in order to blend the mics how they see fit within the respective tracks. Dry and dry only on the guitar tones, aside from specific lead sections - good observation.

Now, I'm dying to hear what all 3 of your thoughts are, having all heard And Justice tor All, on what you might have to say (or in reaction) about the kick drum sound specifically, since it is quite unique & distinctive from any of their other albums, .... once you know this very true fact - and I can happily back it up-
The kick drum microphone, as in the only internal "dry" mic aimed at the beater pad (oh, and look up Danmar kick pads if you want the REAL secret, as in used by Lars Ulrich, to that clicky sound that'll save on some over-compression & minor eq processing;) on the kick in studio, was none other than, not a classic kick drum mic, but one of say two of the most iconic radio/vocal broadcasting microphones in modern history - the Electrovoice RE-20.
Now - I've gotta hear what you have to say about that 😯🧐😁

Awesome video as always guys! So sad that the studio albums have come to an end. Been watching since the beginning! Anyways, here are a few things I have to say:

1. Garage Inc. disc one is a collection of covers that Metallica had released before 1998 from singles and b-sides, while disc two is a collection of covers that were recorded in 1998 specifically for Garage Inc., so I recommend listening to both discs if you can.
2. S&M2 actually does have some repeat tracks of S&M. While it isn't many, there are still multiple songs that are repeated from before.
3. If you're only doing five songs from Slayer, Pantera, Iron Maiden, and Tool, I recommend these five for each in order to get a good span of their discography in there:
Slayer - Tormentor, Angel of Death, South of Heaven, Seasons In The Abyss, and Chasing Death
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell, Hollow, 5 Minutes Alone, Drag the Waters, and Revolution Is My Name (Also throw in some 80s glam-era Pantera if you can, that stuff is fun)
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name, Powerslave, Infinite Dreams, Fear of the Dark, and The Wicker Man
Tool - Sober, Forty Six & 2, Schism, The Pot, and Fear Inoculum (or Pneuma)

Sorry for the novel, just some thoughts I had while watching. Great stuff guys! Can't wait for next year!

Metallica approached John Bush to sing for Metallica back in the day. Bush sang for Armored Saint at the time and didn't want to love his band. If you aren't familiar with Armored Saint, Bush later sang for Anthrax for a number of albums. Great singer and James saw that in him... but couldn't get him, so James resigned himself to singing. Personally, I'm happy it went that way, as Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without James's vocals.

"When they play it live, do they slow it down?" No way... if anything, Metallica tends to speed up their songs when they do them live. They ABSOLUTELY did so back when I saw them in 1989. EVERYTHING was faster. Amazing show.

I didn't realize that "Am I Evil?" is on the remastered version of Ride the Lightning. Could it possibly be a live version? I know the studio version was on the 1984 re-release (Elektra Records version) of Kill 'Em All, along with "Blitzkrieg." I remember when I was seeking that album out on CD, I specifically hunted for that version, because I love that album with those two cover songs included. :-)

If you listen to their commentary they are contradicting themsevles. Then one of them will say they dont like something then the other goes I do like it. So the first person changes their comment to liking it. To be honest this album was a half attempt at Metallicas great come back. There were a couple of great songs but still they have lost that x-factor or energy. But then I grew up with Metallica right through my childhood and I watched/listened to them in their prime. Every new album I always have hope that I will get my face melted, still waiting. I guess as I got older other bands have come and gone and improved on the sound, Metallica remained in the same pocket.

You guys should A/B a Martin Birch-produced Maiden album from the ‘80s vs. a Kevin Shirley/Steve Harris-produced album from the 21st century (maybe Somewhere In Time vs. Dance of Death).

Birch’s production is pristine, with Steve Harris’ bass frequencies cutting through the guitars brilliantly, while the Shirley/Harris albums are muddy as hell and brickwalled.

Maiden’s 21st century albums are mostly good-to-excellent, which makes the production all the more frustrating.
