s&box is NOT GMod 2 - And Why That's a Good Thing

Indeed, the people expecting this to be GMOD 2 are gonna be disappointed. S&Box is more align to games like Roblox.

I read Facepunch's S&box posts every time they upload. Various updates such as the Hammer Gizmos and Glass Shader are gonna help S&box become a next generation game.

s&box is basically Unity but using Source 2, with way more default assets and functions. that's the shortest way to say it.

The only thing Im worried about is, they may focus a lot on the game creation aspect, and neglect the ability to just go into a map and spawn stuff in and do whatever you want, making that part of the game difficult to understand, or very underdeveloped. Alongside the gamemodes, one of my favorite things to do in Gmod was to just go into a map, with friends or by myself, and spawn stuff in, and see what I could do! Im really hoping they keep this in mind as they develop the game!

You’re limited. Gmod has al lot of good rp Servers - like Star Wars, Harry Potter, ReallifeRp. And so on.

This game is Gmod mixed with dreams, love it cant wait for full release the flood gates will open first of course with memes but in the first couple of months we will have crazy modes and mods

Im actually excited for this game. I am a garry's mod fan. I have been since I was around the age of 5 or 6. I think that s&box will be a better version of garry's mod, but more of the community centered stuff. I think that its going to be easier to get mod making dev tools

Lol i'm watching some S&nbox vids to catch up on how it's going and 10 seconds into this one I think to myself "I hope someone remakes the hidden:source mod" and lo and behold. Back in the day I was a beta tester on the source mod project and created a couple maps in the hammer editor. I miss that game a lot, spent many hundreds of hours in it and I would love to see it come back in modern form. No other game captured the thrill of phys-gibbing someone with a wooden pallet, or endlessly taunting a helpless player with creepy voicelines before finally pigsticking them into oblivion.

I'm not convinced. Gmods popularity comes from all of the assets you had on hand from other Source games and tools that were easy to learn. Easy to learn, hard to master you could say. s&box doesn't have that edge.

So, you never actually say WHAT sandbox is. I built planes from bending machines and balloons in gmod, this seems like a game developing platform, but I don’t know, you aren’t telling us what it is.

Seems like a cool indie sandbox engine for people to make their first games on.

Nothing will ever replace the jank and endearing qualities of the early source engine, which is what makes garry's mod have such long staying power. Any of these game modes can be made in any engine, it's the original source engine that lends so much to the appeal and replayability of original gmod.

Without Half-Life assets and a decent sandbox gamemode, s&box will be dead on arrival. That's what made Gmod a success, s&box has to pray and hope that people will want to spend time making their own games (and people buying them apparently lol) rather than just playing them.

As someone with thousands of hours in Gmod, I am more and more disappointed with S&Box every update that I see, especially when I heard individual addons will not be usable (only Gamemodes). Garry seems incredibly nonchalant and uninspired regarding this project. :/

Sorry but as another developer that has put tons of time into making custom content, S&Box IS the successor to Garry's Mod in everything but name.

Sure, Facepunch is trying to do something bigger with it but it will still server the same purpose at its core. You can make anything you want in Garry's Mod, yeah you are fighting the limitations of the engine but it's just a matter of your programming skill.

You seem very passionate about all these little gamemodes people have made already but I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but nobody is going to play those games for more than a few weeks after launch and they will fade into obscurity.

The popular gamemodes are going to be the same as those in Garry's Mod, just on a way larger scale.

But I'm sure you don't care what I say, because workshop contributions don't mean much, I have over a million combined subscribers :^)

So S&box isn't Gmod2, it's like Gmod, but with a bunch of bugfixes, more content, and upgraded to a new engine, wow that sounds a lot like a sequel

one of the gamemodes from Gmode I enjoyed the most was most likely prophunt, but partially because of all the props that were already in the files because of Gmod's cross-game support with other source titles. I have a small fear in the back of my mind that gamemodes like that will take a while to actually pop up in sandbox because people will have to make a lot of the props themselves if the game doesn't have cross-compatibility in the same way. However, I also just look forward to welding together some star-wars-like pod racers in sandbox mode haha

Yo WHAT? There's a unicycle gamemode in s&box?? Im making a game about unicycling and I do street unicycling IRL, its always really great to see other unicycle games and game modes

I understand your arguments on why S&Box is special, with regards to it's almost unlimited potential, however my fear is that it'll be just like any other game making platform, like roblox, limitation breeds creativity, and having HL2 as a starting point is really something very special to Gmod, it instantly gives you recognizable props to mess with, weapons, character models, they all have charm. S&Box without these things is no different than any other sandbox creative space, it blends in with the crowd so to speak. I don't think having Half Life Alyx as a base, with included props and models, would limit its creativity in any way, I think it'd give it that same charm as GMod had, familiar character models and props, and you can add your own with the workshop.

Hope he continues to take his time with it and make it right, if done so, this game has some god like potential and could even be the next big thing.
