I have to disagree with the last one- it is taken a bit out of context. I think the good idea from it is that the rulers (guardians) should be poor and have no money. If they are rich, they become corrupt. Secondly, the producers are the only ones with money. There is no money for anyone else- only the people that produce food.

To my mind- this is an extremely Marxist take and really prefigures a lot of what Marx was trying to say. The idea of a leader being from the lowest class of people means that a government works for the people. The producers being the only ones to have money means that workers control the means of production.

When you lay this form of government and social class out as a hierarchy, it adds a connotation that Plato was trying to attack. This is not a caste system. Instead, I conceptualize it as different categories of people each doing a specific role to maintain a civilization, and no one role is better than the other.

Read the War of the Ancients by Aldinon Exilus. It's an ode to Plato.

People are taking the 'Noble Lie' criticism out of context all the time against Plato.
Read it along the context of the whole book,
"is it not better to tell the children the false FIRST?"
is not the same as
"is it not better to tell the children the false ONLY?"
The former being the original so-called 'Noble Lie'

What I do not get is, in his theory, we are supposed to figure out the Form using logic. For example the form of a table based on all the essential characteristics that tables have, such as having a flat surface and supporting legs. But, how can we determine the Forms of truly subjective concepts like beauty and love? Or do we not need to ‘know’ what those essential characteristics are and just ‘believe’ there exists an Ideal love or beauty? But if this is the case then what is the whole point of this theory?

the question arises. now did he come up with these ideas or have they always been there just was the first to connect dots. after all a philosopher is just another observer of the world but for ppl. i wish we could know what life was like before writing , you can’t run before you walk even though the actions are still there

What the authors of this video argues against is not strictly Plato's ideas, but the construct of Platonism. Plato wrote dialoges, or this is what has been preserved; mainly with Socrates being interpreted as advocating Plato's philospohy. Of course, what this character is saying in one dialogue is not always consistent with what the character of Socarates says in other dialogues. Besides, there are so many instances of symbolism and irony in the lines given by 'Socrates', which makes the construction of a unified Platonic doctrine further difficult. Yet many thinkers still prefers this simplified and one-dimensional version of Platonism, rather than a more disorted version that is more true to his writngs.

But why did he think there were forms? What proof did he have?

What Plato truly believed about the noble lie is unknowable. All we can do is try to come to terms with why we disagree. It forces us to say that some things are more important than being effective.
