DaVinci Resolve Newbies Guide - EASY! Pro Explains

To anyone just arriving on Darren's channel, I encourage you to watch more of his tutorials, take notes and practice. I'm a full time editor who had an interest in coloring. It's been about three months since I started learning DaVinci and Darren's videos have been immensely helpful. I'm now in charge of coloring most of the projects that come through the production company I work for. And just the other day I was brought on set to help develop a LUT with a DP and Director for a 4 week long production. Truly thankful for the knowledge Darren has shared on this channel.

i like your video. but you dont address the first issue. importing media. when i import, i just get a red screen with sound. the screen says "media offline".

i've been in tv since the 80's, so there. in fact i was working with computers in the 70's, so nya nya. i discovered "movie magix" in the 90's and was quite happy to use that for years, it cost £20 and it did all i wanted to do, put a title on a video, cut and edit, do some fades, maybe the odd effect. but then it got fussy about file formats and what drives me mad is having to convert a sound file and a video file from whatever format they arrived in to something usable. then i got creative suite and that was fine for a while, but even now, i'm making little videos on my android, and premiere and soundbooth won't accept some file formats.

i did one short scene for the stallone "judge dredd" movie, at the time was using houdini 3D software, and it would accept any file format you threw at it, and folks in the industry were constantly asking for image files to be converted, and to me it wasn't a problem. it's hard to believe that 40 years later software is rejecting certain file formats and that "common" formats can't be converted easily.
i got hold of da vinci a couple of weeks ago, and so far it's accepted every file i've asked of it. it's easy to navigate if you've already been editing, and not only is it intuitive, but it has a nice "feel" to it as well.

(i've been using it to edit AI videos. for laffs i've been getting AI to write stories, getting AI to narrate and generate stills and putting it all together in da vinci, i have 4 videos i made this week, and in fact i have another channel about playing guitar were all i have to do is suggest a title and AI does the whole thing, everything but the uploading, what a world!).

Thank you so much for the effort you put in your videos. I can no longer afford my Adobe License and I was pretty bummed. But this video actually makes me excited to start exploring DaVinci now!

New to Resolve, but have done editing before. This however is a whole new ballgame. More bells as whistles than you can count. It would be great if you could do some more beginner tutorials, I've watched a few US ones, some of them speak so fast it's hard to take in and follow sometimes. free for life, until they release a new and identical cloud based software called Piccasso Dissolve or some shit, which is the exact same program with all the new updates, where they then stop updating the old existing program until inevitably the updates over time wind up bricking your software making your license useless - if they dont just straight up revoke it. Dont kid yourself, that lifetime license is for the lifetime of the program, which is till whenever they want to make more money off of you.

Excellent, helpful content! I've just started playing around with video after getting a Fuji H1 and now I've added the S20. I can sort of work around in Premier, but I haven't done a deep dive. I've been looking at Resolve and I think this video pushed me over the edge. My wife is a college professor and we have the Adobe educational discount, but I think when she retires in the next year I don't want to pay the subscription for the Adobe Suite. I've already found substitutes for LR and PS, though I'll have to wean myself off using layers.

BTW, I started editing as a teenager in 1967. My high school job was working at a television station and my tasks included running audio during live news broadcasts as well as processing and editing news film. I've also done non-linear editing in the VHS days, directing and producing educational tapes for a medical school. I'm really jazzed by the latest technology and have some fun projects in mind.

I have a decent laptop and trying to edit my 4k drone videos is a nightmare and just kills me!
Tried changing the playback frame rate and messed around with proxies and optimised media setting but never know the best way to work with hi res files….

Hey Darren, thanks for this awesome video, I'm FCPX editor and trying to shift to Resolve, my first question was how to manage media, in FCPX i make new new library and in event i import all the media and best thing about fcpx is that it takes all the media in one fcpbundle file, so if i copy that library anywhere, i can open and edit my project anywhere, but here in resolve not a single video tells that when we import media in project, the media stays to its original location it doesn't copy to resolve project folder, and if the media was imported from some external drive and if that drive is not attached to the system then that project will show missing media red box, until I attach drive back to the system, but if I export project archive only that time resolve ask me if i want to copy media in archive. please read my comment and tell me if I understood all of this right way? I subscribed right away and ill be watching many videos, thanks again for making these videos and making our life easier.

Glad I found you Darren, these tutorials are going to be so helpful for me. I'm starting totally new with almost no experience with anything like this. In a few months I'll share an update.

Been using vegas pro for about 4 years but looking to improve audio and colour correction/grading. This software looks really nice. I’ve used premier pro but found it slow for jump cutting which is what I primarily do.

Darren. I believe the free version uses just one GPU. Please clarify? For example, my M1 computer has 16 GPU cores. Does it use all 16 or only one? Thank you very much.

I used to live in Hove (actually) and this tutorial made more sense than anything else I've seen - Finally I understand the f*@king annoying project database system!!!

Edit: My, and others, biggest gripe about Resolve is that you NEED to be able to sve your scenes / edits with the project footage and just none but you has showed that you can create a project database where YOU want it.

Thank you so much for such a great breakdown of the setup. I come from a design background so have a lot of familiarity with Adobe products, and have done some light animation work with AfterEffects in the past, but the DR interface was a little overwhelming as I didn't understand how the pages interacted with each other. This laid everything out beautifully.

I'm looking to get back into it animation (for title screens, infographics, etc.) and hope to be using DR as it sounds like a really solid system (and I can't stomach the subscription model). Thanks again!
