How to file a VAT return to HMRC for free

No longer FREE ! WHY ?
The Gov should STOP this IMMORAL action to CHARGE us for SUMMITING our legal documents, just disgusting.

It was good while it lasted, but of course now it's a paid service just like all the other MTD bridging solutions. It really boils my pi$$ that we need to pay a 3rd party just so we can submit our VAT returns now.

I have done four returns via Anna and now they want to start charging. Not a lot but I cannot understand why we have to do it this way when HMRC had a perfectly simple way of entering it before. I can still do my rather complicated CT600 online. I suppose that will be next for fee paying.

This is ridiculously more complicated than it has to be. Why even use the spreadsheet as an intermediary? Just create a user interface with 9 boxes that have to be filled.
And instead of the interface being defined by ANNA it should simply be HMRC that implemented the interface. It's absolutely ludicrous that there is no official way to report vat.

It works better in Denmark, that's for sure.

Doesn't work, just errors when you push the submit button (Chrome, Windows 10, Error = ReferenceError: _ is not defined). Appreciate it is free, but a bit annoying. Not sure if they have broke it recently or if it has never really worked.

your template is not working - after uploading I get "Whoops, something went wrong. Please, check the file you've submitted is an .xlsx file and contains your VAT calculation". Everything is definitely correct in the boxes, and the file is the requested format.

Hi I've downloaded the ANNA templates but find they don't open (with any headings etc showing) in my Libre Office Calc spreadsheet software. So, there are no '9 boxes' to fill in with my own VAT figures, that are supposed to be there. Any ideas, please? By the way, When I open the ANNA template all I get is a pretty spreadsheet I can do nothing with and which includes a box reading: Tap 'Trust this Add-On' to complete the installation of the ANNA Admin VAT filing Add-in for Excel and next to it is a picture of a hand-drawn arm and finger pointing towards nothing! So, there is nothing to 'tap' to 'complete the installation'!

That was a breeze, I was concerned as I use Open Office and all the info out there seems to be saying Excel, I used one of your templates then pasted in the data from my open office sheets, saved as xls and all worked perfectly. Thank you very much for this.

how much info is being uploaded to HMRC with this method? is it just the 9 box figures? or also the individual transaction data, purchses expenses etc, included on other tabs in your excel file?

Why is this free? I'm always suspicious if I can't see what you are getting from it

OMG you have to enter all your 3 months transactions into the excel sheet to file this through the portal? Our accounting software does have issues exporting data, but can it just be just imported as and excel file into your spreadsheet as I dont have the time to retype all the transactions for 3 months! Its madness that the HMRC are forcing this upon all businesses, regardless of income or technical ability with software. Thank you for setting this up, I'm in correspondence with my MP over this issue but HMRC are taking the attitude "The computer says No!".

What is the difference between doing this versus entering the numbers directly into the HMRC online VAT return form in their website? Is HMRC going to close down their current online VAT return form?

Downloaded templates told to enter sales and expenses into tabs that don't exist. Frustrating

So how do I sign up to this? Cannot see anywhere to do that?
