Russian athletes should have all their medals stripped, all their prize money seized, and the entire corrupt nation be forbidden from competing in any Olympic or World Cup sports for at least 12 years.

And no Olympics should be held in China or Russia. Ever. Nor any country with human rights violations as egregious as those.

So when did the two controversies of the events happening in 2002 and 2014 be compared when in no way are they even related to each other. What happened in 2014 can be only focused on the event that unfolded itself in a entirely different way. Let us keep the two events in the two olympic games separated from one another.

The "black power salute" was a change my life moment! As a teen, love everyone, hippie in training in 1968, all my friends were behind the Olympians! We KNEW they raised their fists for human rights for all! A similar situation in 2021 in Tokyo. Backs turned during Star Spangled Banner and for what? Chaos and anarchy? I'm still that starry eyed 17 year old at heart! But I only talk of my naivete with my son. Labeled a Boomer, better off silent. It hurts to see how far it's turned away...

I thought the segment on Chinese displacement was interesting, because Atlanta managed to do the exact opposite. If you weren't there in the 1970s and 1980s, I don't think you have any idea how dangerous Atlanta could be. A doctor was struck with a stray bullet and killed standing out on the steps of one of the city's most prominent hotels downtown, and friends who went to Georgia Tech told me they lay in bed at night listening to automatic gunfire more than once. You had to be very brave to go see the Braves play at FulCo Stadium, which required figuring out parking and navigating the area, because walking around downtown Atlanta wasn't something you just did of a random night! It's truly a shame that Eric Rudolph made the pipe bombing the story, because the Olympics changed the entire direction of the city--for the better!!!

To be fair, it wasn't really the Atlanta Olympics so much as the Southeast Olympics, with venues from Birmingham, AL, to Miami, FL, hosting events; yet Atlanta was the center and leaders very strategic in how they used the shot the IOC gave them to make lasting change. The notorious projects concentrated near downtown were split up, replaced with a combinaion of something more like a voucher system and new housing constructed in multiple parts of the city went up. A lot of the money went into updating infrastructure like that, including for a great public transportation system (although that hasn't relieved traffic congestion thanks to people who would rather sit alone in their cars for an hour or two in morning and afternoon rushes rather than use that transportation). Still, it's rated pretty highly overall, and it's certainly the best system in the South. I'm sure there were painful displacements of the disadvantaged in the process of all that change, but it wasn't just a matter of "white" gentrification. Atlanta has become a more culturally diverse city with international and cosmopolitan appeal, a variety of commerce sources, and a wide range of industry types precisely because it became a safer city with an upgraded and modern infrastructure, with the Olympics changing the game for more than just the athletes. I've lived in other places that got marquee events like Democrat/Republican conventions and the Super Bowl. Usually the money seems to move from one pocket of the organization putting it on to other peoples' pockets without much dropping along the way for the community to benefit. Atlanta is the exception, and I've often wondered about the effects the Olympics had in different places.

Tonya Harding was in the wrong yes, But ultimately she had little to no control over what happened to Nancy with what the hitman did to her. Figure skating can either make you or break you coming from experience. It's challenging, sometimes stressful but overall rewarding despite the often toxic setting with rivalries. Unfortunately some irrational thinking was done that tragic day. After watching the film based on this, I don't know how much of it is fiction but it paints Tonya as a victim of everyone around her's actions. So I personally don't blame her for most of it.

I think if the list would have a been a bit longer that the Roy Jones Jr Boxing match Vs the south Korean in the 1988 Games would have been mentioned. The judges scoring the bout scored it making the South Korean boxer wining the gold Medal. The South Korean boxer himself was so certain that he lost that after the winner was announced he couldn't raise his hands to acknowledge the win knowing that a fraud that had just been committed. Having won the gold medal he never fought again out of shame. His own words not mine.
