I want the kitty.❤️
ОтветитьI'm new to all this, still taking classes and trying to get a home studio going. This might be a goofy question but can you glaze them in the backyard as well or does the fire not get hot enough?
ОтветитьHello, in case you see my comment... I would like to know if it is foodsafe when a bowl or cup has been raku fired? Apparently there's still a smell of burn and the piece is very porous ?
ОтветитьHow long does it need to be fired for?
ОтветитьI’ve been dreaming of just about everything you discuss on your channel for about two years now and just moved into a new home where I am also dreaming of collecting wild Clay and building a pit in my backyard to fire them. finding you today feels like finding a missing key❤
ОтветитьHands down the most instructive and least annoying video on raku pottery for "anyone" that I have seen. I have been marathon watching pottery videos as have been sick and want to get into it when I am better, so my comment is not BS. You have simplified things but also explained the meaning of terms so well. Congrats and thanks
ОтветитьObviously…be careful where and when you do this. If it is a long, dry summer, it just takes one spark to drift up in the wind and land on dry leaves to start a big fire.
ОтветитьInstead of putting air-dried pots into the oven to be perfectly dry, could you instead have them over the fire but not directly in for a period of time to effectively accomplish the same thing before pit firing?
ОтветитьGreat Video! Very helpful! Question: I tried my first fire and went well. Some of the pieces had black soot discoloration. I think from the fire/smoke. Any ideas how to avoid? It looks like you built the fire right over the pieces and I didn't notice any discoloration. Thanks!!!
ОтветитьWow bro that was a super clear explanation. . I love and admire skilled ppl work in pottery . But me no way trained . For ppl like me it is fantacy , but its a life supporting art with heritage and hard work👍👍💯💯💐💐
ОтветитьVery inspired by your video! Thank you so much!!
ОтветитьThanks for sharing this! This is an absolutely magic process.
ОтветитьExceptionally well explained. Thank you for widening knowledge.
ОтветитьNicely done! Im going to try this now.. You are a wonderful teacher!
ОтветитьDamn, you have some beautiful soil.
ОтветитьGood thing I bought that pair of asbestos gloves.
ОтветитьSo this makes me wonder if I could get away with firing a few pots in the campfire fire pit when I go camping with my daughter in November…also, I have a few low grog clay pots that were fired in a kiln to come 6 (2225 degrees Fahrenheit)…but moved before glaze firing them. Could these pots be warmed by a campfire, then moved into the fire and covered incompletely for at least an hour and left to cool as the fire burned out?! Would they take on a shiny black color or wouldn’t that work because they were previously bisque fired? Not sure we could get away with it, but seems like it may be safe in a designated fire pit!
ОтветитьRobert Pattinson?
ОтветитьIf you want lighting bolt shaped designs on your pots use horse hair and lay the Individual hairs on the hot pot in creative ways its beautiful 😍
ОтветитьAlthough unglazed pottery is not considered "food safe" there are ways to sealing the surface that don't require vitrification. You can also use the porous pots to cook in since the heat will eliminate the bacteria. Use common sense , don't store food in them for long. Keep them clean and dry. Heat them to sterilize. Burnish and apply beaswax to minimize the porosity. There are hundreds of cultures around the world that still use this kind of pots for everyday eating.
ОтветитьGreat explanation!
ОтветитьYou just helped me so much. I’m thinking about a pottery wheel soon and our old fire pit randomly exploded and started shooting rocks at my parents. So… we’re going to build one. I obviously am not going to get a kiln anytime soon and was wondering on how to fire clay. Thank you so much!! If you use a pottery wheel, what wheel do you use? Tysm.
ОтветитьDo you fire the pot twice? A second time for glazing? Has long would you recommend this process take?
ОтветитьYou can use sand as grog as well. It helps your work not to crack
ОтветитьWouldn't be easier make an actual oven on your backyard? Then use it for pizza, pottery and pies 😂😂😂
ОтветитьCould you do this with paper machete clay?
ОтветитьI am glad I found this video. Thank you. I look forward to trying this out. It is very informative.
ОтветитьI think I'm in love with your voice✨
Ответитьlearning a lot from you.
What were you doing in Madrid?.
what if you were to melt some Bees wax and pour some on the interior and exterior.
No it's not a glaze, but the wax would fill the pours, and thus, give you a waterproofing that could be cleaned.
Kind of like waterproofing a Gord canteen.
Brilliantly informative, narrated with clarity and no fakery, such a refreshing attitude ❤
ОтветитьThanks, very informative. Great vid
ОтветитьYou know the greek pottery, orange-ish/terracotta with black figures? They drew the figures with some kind of mud on the pottery before baking it, then made sure the oven produced enough smoke which then colored the muddy areas. I'm guessing they used the red/orange clay that's all over the Mediterranean but idk what the mud mixture was. Quite dark and thin so they could do detailed drawings with it probably. Maybe they used some volcanic mud, that's pretty dark, and often smelly lol. I'm sure you can find more info about it on the internetz. Might be cool to experiment with. Reinvent some ancient techniques.
ОтветитьOh yes, I'm from Chile and here is how it's done by treasure women that preserve the traditional techniques like Quinchamalí and Pomaire, personally I enjoy using them a lot more than other more "sophisticated" utensils...From a sensory point of view the sound of this ceramics is so much gentle ❤️
ОтветитьThis is a Bisque firing... Are these now durable enough to be partially glazed and re-fired in a kiln? ... What abou glass firing the insides to make them usable for liquids?
ОтветитьDon’t burn pallets. They have chemicals in them
Ответитьthis is awesome but be careful heating up that galvanized metal.
ОтветитьThanks for the video. Love what you are doing. Suggestion: Don't start with pots, bowls or dishes. Start with bricks. Bricks are 100% functional. You can make all you want, and you will never run out of uses for them... like building a pit-fire kiln, or a pit-fired drying oven, or... a pizza oven. Look at an average brick and you will see huge pieces of grog. That's structural. When you get to the point that you are ready to start making pottery, follow this wisdom; pottery is old. There was a woman in Africa that lived in a village known to have been making pottery at that location for 33,000 years continuously. That simple, humble woman was a living archive. Seek these people out. Celebrate their connection to our past. The oldest pot shard I have seen is said to be 1.5 million years old and came from South East India.
ОтветитьNice ideal...Qty
ОтветитьYour Firepit IS a Kiln
ОтветитьIve found doing this in a large weber grill can work. I build a perimeter of fire around a single piece, but keep it small (twigs, leaves, thin branches) and slowly make it larger and bring the fire closer and closer to the center. Eventually, the fire completely engulfs the piece after about two hours. Then I just add charcoal on top since it’s light but burns hot.
ОтветитьThank you 😊
ОтветитьDuring this process, you also made charcoal. On a future firing, you should add a ton of that in towards the end of the heating process to crank up the temp even further. If you add a pipe to the bottom that adds more oxygen rich air from outside the fire, you can achieve even higher temps.
ОтветитьInstead of deadpan talking to the camera, forcing us to stare at your ridiculous moustache, try doing a voice-over some helpful visuals. The monotone staring contest is weird.
ОтветитьYou have such a cute cat! She reminds me of one I had like a decade ago. I love cats!
Your pots look fantastic too! I'm going to try to do this at the little bush craft fort I made.
Talent
ОтветитьWow you are such a smart and beautiful talented young man.
