The reason why DreamWorks open sourced their engine is so that they could lay people off at their main location, and hire Sony Imageworks to complete large parts of their upcoming films. If it wasnt released to the public, it would've been legally impossible for Sony to get ahold of the software. Its not out of the goodness of their hearts, and in any case this engine is designed for big render farms and not indie studios.

There are plenty freely available render engines -- from Blender's Cycles and Eevee to Pixar's Renderman and Luxray to things like Guerrilla, Radeon ProRender or even (Apple Silicon version only) Octane.

In many cases, it's pretty obvious that the renderer has been made free so that other people can do the hard part, integrating the engine into the popular 3D software packages.

it makes sense because they don't make their money selling this and their rivals probably have their own tools so they lose nothing and they could potentially get some benefits from this.

They will cut the bill in continuous integration and static analysers.
Every SRE would agree that making a project opensource is cost effective.

I see that they have ulterior motives with the licensing, but in reality, this is fair game for what open-source licenses can mean. The majority of it is the free as in freedom, but the other side of the coin is allowing community development. If companies even do half of this with making a core tool they use available as FOSS and their full applications remain proprietary, that still creates far better of a world for software than it can be currently with many company tools being completely unknown to outsiders.

Well it's certainly a Win Win. It being a renderer sounds as if artists wouldn't be able to use it out of the box though. Maybe blender could at it to it's renderers somehow??

Mentioning Red Hat, I took a Java course on a Fedora Workstation, and even now if I write Java it'll be on a Fedora workstation, and I honestly hate Fedora and Java (maybe that's why I put them together). But truthfully I'll bet anything that sort of course, where the tools were a part of the learning, probably paved the way for many Red Hat developers or Java developers in the same regards. It's what students learned on. The potential of this opening the doors to budding animators who want to make the next Shrek or How To Train Your Dragon is at least another dot to connect in the journey of "how do I become a blank". My mind immediately went to Blender when I heard about this, but that just means it will only be yet another renderer on the platform, along side Cycles or Eevee or whatever comes along next. The best thing about FOSS is that there's always another option down to choose down the road and rarely are options taken away unless people literally stop using them or a superior alternative comes along. Even then superior alternatives are up to debate and often come down to preference, as we still see with packaging or init systems. This is an ultimate benefit to everyone, and yes that includes DreamWorks, but also what if this renderer is very good. We replaced X and init.rc (though some will tell you otherwise). All options are off the table by this point in our 30 years of GNU/Linux, things just come and go as they are necessary. The question of necessity is determined by the users, and the real question in this case is will the world want to use this thing, or will something better come along to eat its lunch?

I work in 3D, this is awesome, making the tool free like this ensure that some talent already knows it when they get hired over there, the 3D world is very small, and likely everyone envolved in animation will have atleast tested it before, plus it's free bug testing, even fixes. Pixar already had this with renderman, and yes there is a way to use it on blender xD

this is honestly just good business sense tbh. You get a ton of community surrounding your project, free bug testing, maybe even a few pull requests to fix bugs you havent been able to get around to fixing, and, oh yeah, R34 of your characters gets more accurate to the source material! Okay maybe that one isn't a benefit for dreamworks directly, but hey the rest of the internet doesn't care.

Only 3D anything I've done is make a few maps for Unreal Tournament like 20 years ago, and that didn't involve any modelling, just drawing some crappy textures in MS Paint and arranging some geometric shapes ad nauseam. I did kind of push up bits of the ground here and there, but nothing fancy, it just involved stretching a few shaped brushes. Although, this is still cool news.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 sucked, but it looked GOOD. Now, I am not comparing it against the second one—that one was a perfect movie and it is hard to beat it in a sequel. But, 3 was rushed and they changed the script and story and had to cram too many plot points into one film...
