Leaders are chosen by the group, bullies are rejected by the group. Omega willingly submits to the others and is not rejected. Alpha keeps the peace, but the pack maintains a hierarchy, even though they are a family. Dogs are domesticated wolves. If you have multiple dogs, especially of the same gender, you should recognize the hierarchy. If you don't, you may cause resentment and conflict between them. I am a canine behavioral consultant and I see many cases like this. Dog owners and confused trainers causing unnecessary conflict.

To the people saying "That's not the alpha because he's overly aggressive!":
Nope, this overly aggressive puppy IS the alpha.
Yes, a TRUE alpha is calm and assertive, but not all alphas are true alphas. "Alpha" just means top dog, no matter the temperament or undesirable behaviour.
This puppy is the alpha OF HIS LITTER. If he were to go to a dog park (when he grows older) he would be put into his place by true alphas.
So if we go by your word, then where is the alpha, huh? If there really were another alpha, that dog WILL NOT back away when this little grouchy furball acts up. It may not instantly guard the food like this guy, but he/she WILL be the one possessing the food bowl in the end. An alpha will not take this guy's antics and would stand his/her ground, only acting with aggression if Mr.Grouch doesn't get the message after several tries. Mr.Grouch possesses the food bowl every single time. Therefore he IS the alpha OF HIS LITTER.
Leerburg Enterprises(?) shows exactly what I am talking about. His video is almost exactly like this one - a litter of Belgian Malinois puppies feeding from one food bowl and the alpha claims it. At first, a false alpha - an overly-aggressive puppy just like this one - takes possession of the food bowl, but a while later the real alpha comes over and takes over possession just by posture and a few snaps.
So I will repeat once more: "Alpha" just means top dog, whether that dog has the qualities of a leader or not. Mr.Grouch is the alpha of his litter. (But ranks can change as they grow older.)

Wow this comment section and video are full of people who have no clue about dog behavior. The term "alpha" comes from research in the 1960s and 1970s on captive male wolves forced into small enclosures with other unrelated males. In this extremely artificial environment, the researchers dubbed the wolf who "came out on top" the "alpha" wolf. The researchers who performed these studies have since denounced their methodologies and ridiculously flawed experimental design, and the scientific community as a whole recognizes the research to be extremely flawed and not applicable to real life scenarios. Wolves do not act like this in a natural environment. They form nuclear families with a breeding female, a breeding male, and their most recent offspring, similar to a human couple and their children. Then the offspring mature and disperse. That's it. They don't fight for status or first access to resources. The parents do the hunting, so they eat first simply by default when they kill the prey animal. Unfortunately, the term "alpha" took on a life of its own and has since been erroneously applied to other animals who also don't have hierarchical systems in their social structure. Dogs are not wolves. Dogs are a domesticated animal, a completely different subspecies with different genetics. Wolves don't have an alpha dominated social hierarchy, and neither do dogs. What you see in this video is a puppy displaying classic, textbook signs of resource guarding. It is acting dominant, yes. It is trying to maintain access over a resource (the kibble) in the presence of another individual (its littermates). It's not the "alpha" though. There's no such thing as an alpha. All you see here is a puppy that needs training intervention immediately. If the behavior is allowed to continue to develop, I wouldn't be surprised if that puppy grew up and severely injured or killed another dog or person over food, a toy, a bed, etc. The people in this video and whoever titled the video are incredibly irresponsible and should not be allowed to breed puppies until they educate themselves.

I'm annoyed that basically no one will see this comment. I'm more annoyed that those who do probably won't listen to any of what I said. If I get any response, it'll probably be from someone calling me an idiot because they claim to be "alpha" to their dogs or one of their dogs is "alpha" to the others. Sadly, a quick google search of reputable, scientific, peer-reviewed sources will support what I've said, but many people are unwilling to admit they are ignorant of a topic. Many people double down when faced with evidence that contradicts their beliefs. Please do your research, be open to learning, be open to being wrong, and be willing to change for the better.

this is so stupid. This has nothing to do with "finding the alpha male", it's a puppy with a genetic predisposition to resource guarding. and repeating this over and over again is rewarding him (or her, a female puppy is just as likely to act like this) for feeling stressed and using aggressive behavior to "fix" the problem. and it's teaching all the other puppies in the litter that they need to rush over and gulp down food and "fight for it" or they won't get any. Dog's don't have an "alpha", and people's obsession with the concept causes a lot of unecessary stress and training and behavioral issues with dogs down the line.

In my opinion, nothing that pup displayed tells that he's the alpha. Not his posturing, not his lower tail setting as he showed aggression, and certainly not his nervous growl and snapping. He's just a pup with a seed of resource guarding behavioral issues. The puppy that put him down with its paw and stood over him for a second with a confident posture and a tail held up high has way more alpha potential. Especially when it walked away from the conflict at this age with a clearly unstable pup in the pack. It is already building pack leadership qualities at a young age... Add to that, you're not meant to find an alpha by making puppies compete for food. That is just wrong and screams a totally wrong understanding of dog behavior. You find the alpha by observing dogs at playtime rather than making puppies compete for food. At playtime, hunger is taken out of the equation, and you get to observe them over a wider range of behaviors. Behaviors where you actually get to witness how an alpha asserts dominance without showing aggression. How they carry their tail, how they hold a stiff posture and stare down other pack members, how they claim their own personal space, how they mount other pack members, and how the pack members just accept it from the alpha. Things like how they claim toys without getting into a fight for them, how they hold their necks high as other members lick their chins from below, and all of that should be asserted with minimal vocalisation. Certainly not by nervously growling and snapping over a bowl of food...I'm sorry, but I would not go to the person in this video as a choice for my preferred breeder anytime soon. And as for the people who've already somehow established that that puppy is the alpha and are boasting about their conclusions from a less than three minutes clip? I say to them, come on! What on earth are you on about? Do you even know anything about dogs? Good God!

@herodesu7102 - 26.03.2023 08:35

That's the weakest most insecure dog, because only the weakest most insecure dog feels the need to overcompensate its weakness by being overly aggressive. It's just saying, "I need more food because I am weak. You guys are stronger so you guys don't need as much." The other dogs are just "being the bigger man/dog" by putting up with him. It can't be an alpha dog because its dumb, because only a dumb dog would antagonise the whole pack. Only a fool would make enemies when he can make friends instead. Just like humans.
