Are oil based economies not dysfunctional because of outside Western interference?

It's impossible to listen to this patronising drivel. The perspective is so USA orientated it amounts to propaganda. Marxism/Leninism is not like Christianity (to the silly and benighted Soviets), for example. Marx and Lenin actually existed.

Having just lived in Russia for 4 years I realised the limits of understanding of these hosts. It made me realise how subjective the study of history is.

The chemistry between these two presenters makes this easy informitve listening when quite often informitve dialogue isn't that easy to listen to.

... A very valuable contribution to the culturalization of masses, as they used to say in my place of birth when I was little... Very well researched and intelligently presented, with the tandem format greatly helping with flow and dynamics...
As for criticism, I would point out what I see as excessive mockery of historical characters (particularly Dominic, who gives continuously the impression of considering himself irresistibly funny - he makes the joke, and he's the one laughing); the analogies with staples of contemporary life, usually ironic, are sometimes, forced, a bit awkward...
...In this particular one, I find it surprisingly naive to focus (as regular people in casual conversation do) on Vladimir Putin's "mind" (his KGB past and all that), when it's a lot to say about the politics inside the "alliance", from 1990 onwards and its contribution to the actual state of affairs. I happen to be from a place which should have no issue with Russia if it wouldn't have become a part of the "alliance" (and, as a consequence, in great, heavy debt towards the U.S., due to weapon purchases).
Now, Russia was made hostile, the country entered the generalized arm race... and we can talk forever about VP's mind...
Overall, though, a well-done podcast...

Sandbrook laments the collapse of the Soviet Union, uses 'nationalist' and 'populist' as pejoratives, and scores yet more brownie points with the BBC and the msm.

After the weak liberal bullshit you tacked onto watergate. You BETTER decry socialism in this episode.

No excuses, no oh it’s just never been done correctly.

You announce it as evil and vehemently oppose its existence or move to China
