Norman Lear sent Gloria and Michael off to California, got them divorced, killed off Edith and killed the show. It should have ended on a happy note.

I think you need to be a parent to really understand the "empty nest" feels on this one. Sucks when they need to leave to live their lives, and knowing you're not going to be there 24/7 to protect em anymore.

I was 6 yrs old when this aired and I only got to watch the reruns. And I remember this episode like it was yesterday. I was in middle school. IMO all the 70's and 80's shows were the best, and some 90's.

Remember that this was before airline deregulation and airfares were relatively expensive -- working class people couldn't afford to travel frequently. Often it was 5-10 years between long trips.

That's why they're so emotional -- they honestly didn't know when (or if) they'd see each other again.

I don’t understand why the families didn’t just join and help raise Joey. After Archie’s and Edith’s demise, they keep the house and start all over.
