Well I have Cancer again so I chose to listen to this song again like some 3 years ago when I was first diagnosed with Cancer. Went thru a bad heart attack (Widow
Maker) and open heart surgery about 4 months ago.

I can't TELL you how important this song is to me. I had been taking care of my mother for 2 1/2 months. On Christmas Day (literally) my Dad was roaming the halls of the local hospital in order to find my Mom's X-Rays, MRI's and PET Scans. 2 days later, my Mom's Doctor had her at Duke Medical Center to re-interpret the results. I was with Mom around the clock along with my Dad, and I missed a New Year's Show with my Band because I was down there with my Mom. She told me that the bedside manner of many of these doctors was non-existent. She basically told me that they told her to go home to Hickory to die.

There was a curtain in the room, and I asked her, "Are they standing behind this curtain only to step out when we leave the room?" You are like Dorothy and the Wizard. IGNORE THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!" First time I had seen her laugh in weeks. She came back to Frye after a Stroke (no one told us that your blood gets thick when you have cancer) and they fed her pure sugar (i.e. Ensure, Pancakes and Syrup, Gravy Biscuits, etc,) You could almost see the Pancreatic Cancer growing. I knew Pancreatic Cancer was bad, but she would panic at the smallest thing, so I did everything I could to lift her spirits.

One night, my good friends told me that I needed to get away. I was only taking 1 hour off per day to go and take a shower and bring fresh clothes.

I went to meet my friends, and I turned on the radio.

Normally, this is a Top 40 / Rock / R & B station. But this song came on.

I sat in my car in the Parking Lot and SOBBED. Not just CRIED, I SOBBED! This song was every bit of what I had Mom do due to the fact that I knew what an incredibly fatalistic Cancer this was.

Her Holistic Doctor told her NO sugar, but that she needed to up the Ruffage and Protein. The Cancer started to SHRINK. But when she had to go into the hospital for her Stroke, The Pancreatic Cancer Flourished.

March 16th, I brought up my curlers to do Mom's hair (she had asked me to make sure she always looked presentable! lol.)

My Dad walked over and kissed her on the forehead and told her how beautiful she was. Mom said to me: "Honey, when you find a man, make sure it's someone like your Dad who will be there for you even when you are sick."

The next day was March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. The new room that they gave us was considerably larger, and it just so happened that it SNOWED that day. Very rare for Hickory, NC in March. I was sitting in the Bay Window watching the snow, and I heard my Dad say, "Honey, I love you." And Mom said, "I love you too. Ronnie, we've been so blessed." And Daddy said, "Yes we have sweetheart"

That night . . . my Mom passed away.

Two 1/2 years later, my Father died from Pancreatic Cancer also.

This song just resonates through my heart because Mom would say to me, "I want to do an all natural plan. What if they won't let me do that?" I said, "Mom, then I will stand between you and the Doctor and tell him that I'm going to throw punches unless the doctor does exactly as you say." lol. She laughed. I said, "Mom, I will look out for you for anything that you do or that you need. You tell me, and I will be sure it gets done." She stood straight and hugged me and said, "Honey, I appreciate that so much."

REGARDLESS, THANK YOU TIM MCGRAW for putting into song everything that I was feeling about my Mom at the time, and for the future, what I felt for my Dad when he was sick. I sang this song to him.

It was a release and a relief because I knew that my parents, no matter how 1950's -- 1960's they were, still lived their life for God, for Jesus, for the Holy Spirit, for their kids (ALL OF US), and to enjoy life itself. My Dad would take us to Myrtle Beach every year. Sometimes, he would come home with only $1.00 in his pocket, but we never knew. He made sure that his family was Happy, and we were. Thank you again!!

I got nailed with blood clots in my right lung. I had just finished one helluva rugby match final game of the season. I knew something was wrong in my leg. But i never stopped training for that game. Broke a tooth, took some damage to my upper body. Thought nothing of it. Then a few days i couldnt breathe. I sat in ER with some others doubling my age telling them they had lots of life left in them and to keep pushing. I was there as doctors told them their news. So when my time came and they pulled me into a private room. Hows a guy supposed to take that.
My infamous line in my game, is now my life motto. I dont know whats ahead for me. But im not giving up easily. Its been a week now. But im going to enjoy everything i can. Spend time with my family, teammates, and friends and live life to my fullest.
Oh and the words that rang on that field and to this day...

Ok I'm gonna say something kinda weird here but I "lived like I was dying" and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. And hear me out, there's a point I'm making.
When I was born a preemie, my little internal organs didn't form right & my left kidney was unattached and laying in my butt cheek till I was 20; a perfect little kidney that SHOULDVE been dead. My doc told me that IF I lived to 50, which he said was unlikely, I'd go into kidney failure
I have a RARE bowel disorder- my gastroenterologist said there's maybe 100 cases in the world- and "If ya make it to 30, you'll be lucky. If u live to 40, it'll be a miracle".
3 months ago I turned 56 and yes, I went into kidney failure. My surgeon's words were sure prophetic. But by keeping on a strict kidney friendly diet and no caffeine and low protein, I've been able to keep my numbers at a healthy level.
And I became a vegetarian four years ago and wouldn't ya know I haven't had a bowel obstruction since.
I made my sister promise she will play this song at my funeral because I had spent the last 20 years helping others, cause as I told my doctor who has become my friend after 31 years of sleepless nights fighting to keep me alive, "I can take any of this pain-- every squeeze, every surgery (there's been 39) IF I can make sure that something really neat & wonderful comes out of all that pain".

In 2012 I was diagnosed with stage 4 Multiple Myeloma Bone Marrow Cancer. I had already beated plasmacytoma that cost me much of my thorasic 9 vertebrae. After back surgery I went through 35 sessions of radiation theraphy then a stem cell transplant. For the next 11 years I took a chemo pill daily that kept me in remission...until 9 months ago. Now I am dealing with active MM and at the same time Pre-Leukemia. I am back in chemotherapy. And everyday I play this song and live life as if today is my last. The message is strong and clear.

Diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, i have had a rough past 6 months. Avoided this song for that whole time. Listened today and it was a great release. Cried uncontrollably. Great song from a good example of what a human being should be! Humble and kind is still my fave though, in my eventual passing I hope my children take those lyrics to heart.

I had lived like I was ready to die. Drugs it's what killed me and I was brought back. It was not my time yet. I have to finish my journey as father. But I love this song because it makes you think about the opportunities you have in life as a father, son, brother and so much more. Sometimes I wish they didn't bring me back but I can't let my son be crying over me because I committed suicide.
