Looks nice. But don't recommend filling up using wood. Specifically, wood will absorb nitrogen from the soil, until it breaks down. It will also attract insects that break down woods, that then could attack moist areas of the raised bed. Another thing, don't recommend using roofing materials on the inside of the bed. These could very well leach PFAS into the soil. Be careful using manures in raised beds. Overtime, they cause salt build-up and will interfere with plant growth. Additionally authentic railroad timber can leach arsenic.
ОтветитьThey look nice, but all that time and expense and your right back to where you were before. Not gonna last for the exact same reasons you got rid of the previous beds. The butt joints are the weak spot compounded by using pine. Been there done that. Not to mention it's overkill. Been vegetable gardening over 60 years. Got into the raised bed hype 40 years ago. Experimented with half a dozen different styles and about 15 years ago went back to traditional ground beds. Raised beds are more work, more maintenance, more watering, more money, more bedding soil. Focus on the soil not the bed.
ОтветитьHow wide is the metal sheeting? With 18” vertical supports and the 3.5” horizontal 2x4s equaling 25”. Do they sell it in 25” width?
ОтветитьNice!
ОтветитьI like the way you present the project. I built a similar bed with an L shaped walkway on our property in Mississippi about 10 years ago with a few modifications. I had 4x4 posts on the corners, and created a trellis around the sides for muscadine, cucumbers, etc. Our first season had a ton of tomato bugs and squash bugs, so I brought in some green lizards from Louisiana, Anolis Carolinensis, and they crushed the bug problem, along with a little D.E.
ОтветитьIs the adhesive waterproof sheeting safe for food production?
Ответитьcan we or should we use raised beds on rooftop gardens?
ОтветитьToxins leaching from those railroad ties into your garden soil.not good
ОтветитьI never understood why people fill your raised bed more than halfway. are you not planning on builing soil every year?
ОтветитьThat base board it going to be a termite town.
ОтветитьThat wood will rot in 1 year and have termites.
I messed up and used regular wood and it don't work.
BUY VERY EXPENSIVE?
ОтветитьGuy is giving advice on raised bed building and is using pressure treated near food. Instant loss of credibility!
ОтветитьDo yo have a compiled list of materials you used?
ОтветитьMantab kak SIMON
ОтветитьGreat looking plan and execution and a fun video to watch. I was thinking that since you are going to use rail road timbers as a boarder, that it might be a good idea to dig them in and use them as support to hold the base of the raised be in place. They would serve the same function aesthetically, and provide strong support to keep the long sides in place. Just a thought. Thanks for the video. It is so helpful seeing it come together.
ОтветитьThis is the incorrect way to use corrugated sheeting. You should never use it with the corrugated lines horizontal, all this does is create ledges for dust/dirt etc to sit on. Corrugated sheeting must always be used vertically.
ОтветитьI love your garden bed
ОтветитьRai row
ОтветитьHey,nice build, I'm thinking to do something similar but was thinking to place on a concrete slab? Would this help the wood on the bottom from rot?
ОтветитьMost people do this in an urban environm and it would cost a lot of money to fill these raised beds.
Ответитьgreat job I've been looking for some ideas on raised beds, can't wait for your next film
Ответить@SimonSaysDIY How is it holding up? I may do something similar, but to avoid the pieces of wood over the top getting in the way of gardening, I'll likely use threaded rod below the dirt. I'll also coat the interior metal with something to prevent it from corroding so quickly from the wet dirt.
ОтветитьGreat design. The wood inside is a great way to give nutrients. You should add some earth worms. They are great inside raised beds. I would put garden stones on the bottom of the frame, to mitigate any moisture. I am definitely going to use this design. Thank you. ❤
ОтветитьPressure treated wood should not be used with vegetable garden beds due to it leaching nasty stuff into your soil that your veggys pick up. redwood or ceder work well.
ОтветитьHaven’t read any comments and don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet. But be careful of which cow manure brand you use. If you can make sure it didn’t come from cow that was fed hay spraying with Grazon! Otherwise you will have to replace your soil. I’m not making raised beds like you, more of the usually type that you removed and I’m using MY lawn clippings and fallen leaves from my own yard to compost over the winter months.
ОтветитьWhy do u live near jungle or is it only lots of trees near road ?
Ответитьis there an update on this recently?
ОтветитьThe rin sides Will rust out fast, and The wood Will ROT and termites munch on The wood, lol, better cender block build.
ОтветитьThis is exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you for sharing!
ОтветитьThe question is .... Why?
Just because you are not fit and you can't bend your knees? 🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
You can buy stainless steel threaded rod for fairly cheap and it won't rot. Super easy to thread some nylon nuts on the ends to hold this all together at the bottoms. Looks super clean nicely done.
ОтветитьSo helpful! Thanks
ОтветитьThe idea is good but very expensive .garden bed.
ОтветитьI use the composite decking materials because they last forever. Real wood rots away in a few years.
ОтветитьNext step I needed was to build a wire mesh frame around it to keep the squirrels and other critter out.
ОтветитьBeautiful job👍good very nice nice
Ответитьsimple ramp thats easily moved cld b used 4 v wheelbarrow. or fill it b4 u complete wall.
Ответитьwhy not use that pressure treated lumber that can handle being in the dirt?
ОтветитьYou have two great helpers there!
ОтветитьWhat do we do about Bear & Dear I don’t mind sharing but that doesn’t really help, want to find a fence around these beds that will work, I’ll plant outside the the fence for Dear Etc… but don’t know ? What do you do? Does anyone have an answer I live in upstate NY just moved here , need any help I can get, Thank you all. Love your raised garden beds, looks like these are the ones for me, thanks so much, I’ll be following.
ОтветитьHaven’t done a raised bed yet but I keep seeing that u need to have drainage holes?
ОтветитьI made a garden bed on top of concrete out of pressure treated lumber and tin. When I stepped back, and looked at the final shell; I realized, the dirt was going to push everything out. In my state of analysis paralysis...I found your video.
I can't have my bottom bracing rotting out. So, I'm using 3/8 inch galvanized steel with rubber and galvanized washers with nuts both inside and out. Never would have come up with this fix without your video!
In addition, I am switching out all of my screws for the roofing nails you suggested. Then covering all my corners in the 40mil roofing material. Brilliant!
As well, I will add a top frame for extra structure.
Thank you!! 🙏
Made you a video but can't upload it here.
Stunning!
Ответитьdo u really need the soundtruck in the background?
ОтветитьSuper cool design! To avoid having to fill the raised bed with buckets, leave the 3 ft end panel off so you can wheel the wheelbarrow in to dump loads of dirt then attach the end panel at the end.
ОтветитьHey, I don't know how much that roof rubber stuff costs, but what if you wrapped that bottom 2x4 that's in the dirt with it to keep it from rotting so quickly? Heck, maybe even do a good strip of it on the bottom of the bottom 2x4 (where you put the old boards) to keep it from directly touching the dirt? I dunno, but seems like a pretty OK idea to me.
Ответитьwith any of the metals leach into the soil? I guess if it's just iron it should not be too bad.
ОтветитьMetal roof plate will be hot for the roots of the plant, inside it was necessary to add thin foam ... or foam styrene, or a laminate substrate in 2 layers.
Ответить
