Hollow Knight Vs Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Battle of the Metroidvanias

I seriously don't see how Ori didn't win at the soundrack and visuals, this video was too biased towards hollow knight

Ori's gaming pace can be used to practice for maneuvering in boss fights on Hollowknight they compliment each other.

I disagree with you about the combat. Hollow Knight has much more simpler combat, which can be easily shaped to people's playstyles through the charm system. However, Ori excels at combat. The skill changing mechanic is quick and doesn't interrupt the flow of combat, and the combat feels similar to the platforming, which as you noted, is also incredible. I'm not saying either is better, just that the aren't necessarily better or worse than each other. Combat hinges heavily on player preference. (Ori does overcomplicate combat a bit though). To note on the bosses, Ori and the Blind Forest only had escape levels, and WotW continued that trend, but they just added actual bosses, so that it felt more like a metroidvania. The escape sequences are also less challenging in a way, and help to emphasize the platforming aspect. I disagree about Hollow Knight. Yes, it has a ton of bosses, but many of them are just small world bosses (Vengefly King for example). However the other 30 are incredible fights and have a great skill curve. Hollow Knight's bosses are just overall more memorable.
I agree with how you said Ori has a surface level story, but keep in mind, the goal for the developers was to communicate the entirety of the story in a way that made it accessible to people everywhere by using music and visuals instead of hiding under thousands of lines of dialogue. This doesn't mean either story is bad it's just that in Hollow Knight you have to uncover the story, or watch a mossbag video. (also Ori didn't copy shards or swords, as there was a prototype version of them in Blind Forest, which released before Hollow Knight). Team Cherry (Hollow Knight) also gave tons different games they took inspiration from, such as Zelda 2, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Faxanadu, etc. It's original as a metroidvania, because it wasn't really intended to be one. They were just making a game. I can't say much about the soundtracks, but they are definitely just different kinds of music, that both fit well into their games and are both great. It sort of just depends on what kind of music you prefer. When you say "better map," say whether you are talking about secrets or effectiveness. Hollow Knight's map is just a bunch of squares, which work very well...if you are familiar with the map. Ori's does a better job of giving the player direction. Although... Hollow Knight's map did give rise to the most overpowered charm, Wayward Compass, so I shouldn't really be complaining.
So those are my thoughts on your analysis. This is really an underrated channel, and you got an instant sub from me. I didn't say any of this to say that this video was bad, because it wasn't. It was amazing. Keep up the good work! (also thanks for the clip of the Primal Aspid killing you. It is a peak example of the Hollow Knight Kingdoms Edge experience).

I think ori and the blind forest is better than ori and the will of the whisps not only becouse blind forest is original but also unlike in will of the whisps, ori in blind forest is that peaceful creature becouse if you think about it... sein has killed all the enemies not ori... but anyway i think you should have made comparison of ori and the blind forest VS hollow knight... wich in my eyes would ori and the blind forest win...

I greatly enjoyed both games and I must say that Hollow Knight have an ambiance and great atmosphere I played it to know more and feel owsomnes of a design and atmosphere, while Ori have better platofrming gameplay for me especially in a secound game, but both games are great and awsome.

I’ve only played Blind Forest and some of Will of the Wisps so I can’t exactly compare them to HK myself, but considering that they’re some of my favourite games ever I’d be willing to try HK at some point if it’s that good (although I don’t think the visuals in HK could EVER compare to Ori in my eyes just cause I absolutely love the aesthetic of nature in general and Ori does it so well)

I never went all the way through hollow knight I lost interest maybe around 3-4 hrs but ori and the will of the wisps was the first Metroidavania I ever played I played it when I was 9~ but to this day is one of or my most favorite game I have ever played

Okay. Ori lost. Ori does have bad bosses but only on EASY mode. I love Ori and Hollow Knight and I think that they are both very good. Ori is just a little brighter than Hollow Knight. 😊

Hollow knight is my favorite but i cant deny the INCREDIBLE movement, abilities, and art of ori. Its so smooth and fast paced that it is securely placed as a masterpiece. However, hollow knight takes my heart with the lore, soundtrack, and replayability. Its simply unmatched.

Although I love both of these games, there was never much of a competition in my mind. Before hollow knight, video games were just this little activity I could do on the side. But now, I can appreciate them for the masterful pieces of art that they are

I've played both multiple times, Hollow Knight is better.

maybe I should play both games before comparing them but, I enjoy the ori games to bits. while I completely respect the hell out of the guys that made hollow knight, there is something about how readable moves are in the game. it's just really hard for me to tell what is happening in hollow knight. in ori it is very clear to me what moves are being done and when. both the player and the enemies need telegraphed with every strike and jump.

I feel like it's not the game, but the way I take it in.

I also really enjoy the spyro remasters for the same reason. it's really easy for me to understand everything that's happening

I consider both of these games as masterpieces, I cant put one obove another when it comes to gameplay. Speaking of graphics and music I would choose Ori every while of my life. Don't get me wrong Hollow Knight theming and soundtrack is a masterpiece, but Ori... It's a level out of this world

Played both. Liked both Ori games, but LOVED Hollow Knight. In fact, I also even prefer Blind Forest to WIll of the Wisps - the artistic and gameplay vision seems tighter to me, which is something that I always appreciate in a game. WotW often felt a bit of a messy game to me - trying out lots of new ideas in a competent way, but not necessarily feeling as 'special' in the execution.

I dont get the same satisfaction from metroid and castlevania vs ori, HK and ender lilies. The adventure and visuals of Ori and HK are really special

Ori's franchese is definietly underrated. It visuals and storytelling is something i haven't seen and something i really miss in other games.

I personally prefer ori, i couldnt get behind the art of hollow knight, as well as the platforming after playing ori, who basically flies almost half the game, and the fact that my fear of underground made hollow knight make me feel trapped. So basically totally biased ori had pretty colors and art and, imo, better music for me ❤❤❤

I wanted to talk a bit about the very different style of movement in these games and how it plays into the combat and platforming elements. A lot of people really like the tight control of HK and it's a big reason why those intricate boss fights work so well. By comparison, Ori has a much less precise and floaty acrobatic style to its movement that lends itself better to the creative platforming and dramatic escape sequences that replace boss battles in parts of the game. They feel so different that you're almost certain to prefer one over the other and they're also so central to the gameplay that this is likely to be as much of a deciding factor for the individual as elements like the soundtrack or visuals.

gotta be honest, it kinda sucks that you didn't point out that everything in hollow knight was hand drawn and hand animated by one dude. ori has great visuals yeah but hollow knight's visuals are incredibly impressive for a 3 person team

Totally agree. I've play hollow knight for 180 hours and still have alot more to do and just finished ori and the blind forest after 12!
