“L.A. Woman” (1971) was the title track to the last Doors album before Jim Morrison passed away.

Morrison recorded his vocals in the studio bathroom to get a fuller sound. He spent a lot of time in there anyway because of all the beer he drank during the sessions.

The first line “Well, I did a little down about an hour ago” is a reference to a barbiturate named Rorer 714 (Quaalude).

Towards the end, he repeats the phrase “Mr. Mojo Risin” faster and faster to simulate orgasm. “Mr. Mojo Risin” is an anagram for “Jim Morrison”❕

Morrison got the idea for the “City of Night” lyric from author John Rechy’s 1963 book of the same name. The novel describes a sordid world of sexual perversion, which he translated into Los Angeles.

Doors drummer John Densmore stated : “The metaphor for the city as a woman is brilliant : cops in cars, never saw a woman so alone - great stuff. It’s metaphoric, the physicality of the town and thinking of her and how we need to take care of her, it’s my hometown.” Guitarist Robby Krieger has called it “THE QUINTESSENTIAL DOORS SONG.”

The band performed this live only once, in Dallas, on December 11, 1970. The only live 16-minute recording is on the bootleg “If It Ain’t One Thing, It’s Another.” 💙LA💜
