I saw this in the cinema with my Dad when I was a boy. I screamed my head off at Donovan shrivelled up! I made a right laughing stock of us!! I was 8. We were sitting right up front. I could see my class mate and his brother in stitches laughing at me as I looked back while screaming to avoid looking at the scenario.
I have to say now, I find it rather unbelievable that Donovan would not know its the wrong chalice. He gave Indiana quite an elaborate historical talk on the grail when they first meet in America. He talks about the Knights and Joseph of Aramathia. Quite a historian actually, at the start if the film.
