Loved the format, loved your comparison, too much talking though. Way too much for a 25-minute comparison video.

I did such a comparison myself. I have the 15 Pro Max and an a7iii with Sony 24, 35 and 135mm primes. I can wrap this up real quick: there’s no realistic comparison between a full frame (or APSC) camera and its huge lenses with any smartphone. Not at pixel level. But: there’s more than image quality in photography. Some of the best photos in history are made the last century with film (and not always professional grade film) and shot with vintage lenses without the clinical corrections of today. You can compare photos from Magnum photographers of the 1960s for example with a modern iPhone and the image quality of the iPhone is ten times better. But is that matter? For me, after a decade shooting (not professional) with various big sensors, my iPhone 15 Pro Max is possible my best camera “experience” I ever had. Sure, it doesn’t have the editing latitude of a full frame camera but I don’t even care (I don’t need shoot ProRAW because I like the SooC images from the iPhone). Shooting raw is a necessity if on big cameras because they don’t have the processing power built in for smart HDR, Deep Fusion, Photonic Engine etc. and believe me, I am sick and tired of editing every single image on Lightroom Classic in order to make it usable. Not to mention the added inconvenience to carry a camera bag full of cameras and lenses and a tripod.

For my street photography or anything during day time the iPhone is my main camera. I am only taking my full frame for blue hour or night shots, especially if I need to print. By the way, I made a test print from iPhone 15 Pro Max on fine art paper 285gsm at A3 size and the image is perfectly fine!

Biggest difference is that the base iPhone 15 without the max or pro still get the same 48 MP camera.

The 15 pro has a little bit more detail…same sensor but different internal processor…so yes it does have an overall stronger processor to get out a little bit more detail on the same sensor….so they are different just not that much

with the beach one, i don't get how you are comparing an iphone with a set algorithm that recovers highlights etc, with a straight out of camera r5 shot. The shots could easily be matched.

I used to be someone that upgraded my iPhone every 1.5-2 years. After my daughter was born I got the iPhone X Max. A year later my son was born. I kept that phone (because it had all their baby photos and videos and I was paranoid) until recently when I came to terms it was time to move on.

So last weekend I got the iPhone 15 Pro Max…

Holy crap!

For context, I’m an independent filmmaker and up until last weekend my soul would die when other filmmakers mentioned they would shoot their project with an iPhone. It made me cringe and die in humiliation for them. But after getting this phone and downloading the BlackMagic camera app (for free!) I can honestly say that the iPhone is a viable option. I’m used to shooting on Arri and RED, but I’m definitely more open to shooting on this phone for smaller things. And while I still prefer Arri and RED, it’s insane to see that phone cameras are catching up so rapidly to cinema cameras in quality. Unreal!

You mentioned that you lived on the road and couldn’t use Apple log video because of storage space. USB C cable and an external SSD drive are all you need to off load your large files from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is actually a great upgrade. I do agree with your comments regarding the camera being similar to the 14 Pro Max. Thank you for the great content!

Im a bit confused, videos that are come from log are washed out, professional videos, usually have mellow editing also, so in reality is very little editing I have to do to a log footage. I still have my 14pro, Im thinking on using Moment's log option for those days with crazy contrast in Florida, I do lots of videos of me kayaking, it'll be nice to have less blown out videos. Thanks, lets hope 16pro makes a great comeback!

Great video! I'm going on vacation next month and was trying to pack light and bring only one lens, but I was struggling to choose between my 35 or my 24-70. This video made me realize that my smaller, lighter, and faster 35 is the best way to go since I've already got a great zoom on me in the 15 Pro.

So here's the elephant in the room for me.... the CAMERAS on the latest iPhones are fantastic, no doubt about it. BUT the software and pos-processing is absolutely HORRENDOUS! In order to get decent pictures you really have to shoot everything in RAW, which creates major storage space headaches when you take 1000's and 1000's of photos (as we all seem to do these days given both the ease of mobile phone photography and of course, social media use).
Even iPhone RAW is not rue RAW though, and it's telling that I guessed 4 of the 5 R5 images correctly due to the way Apple apply over-sharpening, contrast and crushing of blacks. If you shoot just with the regular settings (non-RAW) the difference in certain photos is infinitely greater and somewhat mind-blowing... in an entirely NEGATIVE way. Everything is far far too harsh, and so much detail is lost in a cacophony of over-sharpening and aggressive contrast enhancement which makes so many shots where detail is important... unusable.
