Well done 'Saders, a class act that can't be denied or downplayed.

As a Blues fan, this hurts, but the turnaround from where the team were even two seasons ago is nothing short of revelatory. They bottled it here, no question; played probably their worst game of the season, next to that near-loss to the Highlanders in the early rounds, and got monstered at set-piece, which is inexcusable for that group of forwards. Their fitness, accuracy, structure and execution are all work-ons for next season, but a 15 game unbeaten run is still nothing to sneeze at.

Looking ahead to the ABs, no disrespect to the Cantabs but I fear this bodes ill for the national side; for all their provincial success, the mainlanders have always played a limited form of football, built on sharp skills, strong set-piece and methodical, often suffocatingly ordinary tactics, largely dependent on swift counter-offence and capitalising on opposition. While it's brought them great success, there's actually nothing that special about what the Crusaders do, matter how well they do it and there never has been. The fact that no other NZ province have successfully overcome this kind of defensive, by-the-numbers rugby should be a concern to most NZ rugby fans, since theres little prospect of the All Blacks finding success in the international arena with such a basic platform; NZ's best forwards still lack the bulk and breakdown expertise of their European or South African counterparts, the predictable wide-to-wide passing game, emphasis on defense and set-piece, and arrogant disregard for attacking possession have all bled through into the ABs game for the last 5-6 years at least, and key players like Ritchie Mo'unga, David Havili, Joe Moody, Sam Whitelock and Scott Barrett - all crucial to the Crusaders' success - have proven more liability than asset in recent test seasons.

None of that is to suggest they didn't deserve to win this final: they clearly did, but my point is, the failure of the Blues, or any other NZ province to provide a convincing alternative to the Crusaders formula, is in fact a bad thing for NZ rugby as a whole.

The calls for Razor to take the All Black reins will only grow louder from here, even more so if the ABs stumble against Ireland or drop results in the RC and autumn tour. Robertson's a fine coach, without a doubt, and he may well in time be a fine national coach, but to me the calls for his immediate elevation are misguided, based on a mistaken apprehension of scale of difference between Super Rugby and international footy, and ignore both his near-total lack of international coaching experience and the unsuccessful record of his few hit outs at sub-international level: his stints assisting Robbie Deans with the Barbarians, and the try-less midweek slugfest against the B&I Lions, where his Crusaders team (featuring all of their current All Blacks) delivered one of the weakest results of any NZ team in that series.
