It is a great watch and worth the money for me. It is purpose-built, and I would not recommend it if you are a regular dude who works an office job

Update firmware 13.22 : Garmin has changed the backlight behavior :
" The new backlight behavior is the intended result for the v13.22 software update.
For example - the backlight will turn on when:
- Acquiring GPS to start an outdoor activity or when acquiring GPS to save a location waypoint.
- Viewing the Map whether by itself as a feature or within an activity.
- Going into the Sunrise & Sunset glance and viewing the Sun position menu on the map."

the behavior described above has been introduced by Garmin with update to 13.22, and can NOT be disabled by the user !

The switching on of the lighting in the above mentioned cases is inevitable and can NOT be deactivated by the user. This is also confirmed by Garmin.

With this, Garmin has made this actually tactical watch unusable for the military, because there is no option to disable this. I look at the map in the field and give away my position by the light. Life threatening.

The problem is discussed in the forum, and Garmin's statement: "This backlight behavior is intentional and we have no plans to change it.

Im sorry but no way in hell do I NEED a watch for 1300 dollars. My G-Shock is rugged, tells the time, has a backlight, world time date, and also a timer so i can check a manual pulse rate and manual BP if i ever needed to rely on a manual because my Zoll is down or something. While cool i dont think theres ever a moment where i would need this in the field

I got my Tactix 7 Ballistic a few months ago. It is worth every penny. I am fortunate enough to use almost every feature, and that's what sold it for me. I was worried it would be a waste of features/money, but being able to track my runs, hikes, all the body stats (being very accurate), loading rifle profiles for my long gun, Nod mode, etc really changed the game for me. The battery life is awesome. I charge it maybe every 3 weeks and only take it off to shower. The rubber strap is way more comfortable than the fabric one, but both are good in their own right. I should probably just do a review on the thing and some "how to". Once you start to learn some of the features, functions, etc it becomes very intuitive. The light cracked me up because I use it all the time at night haha.

With the Apple Watch Ultra, and just one tap from an icon on your watch face, you could find out where you are… foot pursuit and you ended up in some random back yard? Pop open Maps, tap location, and you can see where you’re at. Injured and unable to communicate on radio? Call or text someone with voice commands. In the woods with a gunshot wound? Throw up a hail mary with the SOS alarm and when your boys get close they can hone in on you now.

Yeah, honestly for LE specifically I’m saying Apple Watch Ultra and it’s not even a competition. My Garmin lives in a bag in my basement now. It’s a gimmick, whereas Apple just works for everything I throw at it a WHOLE lot better. Now that Ultra is a thing, you have the durability of sapphire crystal and titanium body… plus huge battery life. That really seals the deal.

If you’re the type of person who actually needs the specific features the Garmin has, then you’re actually going to be using specific gear for that which isn’t a watch. Very limited consumer base for those who actually could benefit from this honestly.

I'd say go with the Fenix 7x sapphire solar over the tactix. Save a couple hundred bucks and get basically the same watch. The exception would be someone that is constantly using NVGs. Plus the Fenix has a red light which is better for map reading.

I sold mine and went with apple ultra love it way more… some third party apps and it’s just as good or better and if someone says battery ima laugh at you for months … if your getting a smart watch and you bitch about charging it as your supposedly a super marathoner but can’t throw a watch on the charger whilst in the shower then your not worthy of conversion!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't track everything you do, for example, if you decide to take an afternoon nap, the watch won't take notice, although all other manufacturers readily detect sleep status, and only Garmin persists in requiring you to specify the window for sleep in which monitoring is enabled.

Pulse oximeter. Thats all I want with at least a sample rate of once/5 seconds during workouts. I want to know my blood oxygen levels as I am cycling. I think for the average iPhone user, the iWatch is the best option. It works seamlessly with iPhone and I have found that the only feature I really care about during workouts is music and battery life. If I get a day and half of battery, I am good. I use a cycling computer while cycling because its just much better. Garmin and Apple need to make a bike mount if they want cyclists to replace their bike computers with a watch.

A couple of advantages to solar power on the Pro... If you're actually using the watch pretty actively, as in have it connected to your phone, using GPS for a few hours a day, maybe occasionally listening to music you aren't going to get a month out of it. My tactix 7 Pro estimates ~21 days when fully charged (and that goes down to ~21 hours when playing music), solar just helps push that a little farther as long as you're outside.

Also if you power the watch off and set it in the sunlight, the solar power is strong enough to trickle charge so you can literally go without a charger indefinitely if you're willing to baby it a little bit.

It does have lower power modes as well, you sacrifice some useful functionality, but depending on what you are doing that may be worth it. My standard battery saver mode essentially doubles battery life, and the more extreme power modes push that out another 8-10 days.

Whether you actually need that or not is a personal question I guess, but I like the peace of mind.

That watch is way too expensive to wear if you work in LE, Fire, or EMS... Get a G-Shock GBD-200... It gets smartphone notifications, has Vibe alerts, easy read display, and is only about $120

I have a problem justifying a watch that has a comma in the price tag. Moreso if it is a rechargeable battery that will need to be replaced because there is no guarantee those batteries will be produced long into the future. By the time the battery is cooked and the screen is scratched all to hell, I dont want to hear "that model is discontinued- we cant repair it"
