5 Types of Games you can make with RPG Maker | Part 1

I talk bad about RPG Maker all the time. Yeah, I think it is very limited... but it was my first game engine, back as a child with RM2000. Played LOTS of games. Had a lot of fun with it. Scripting with Ruby changed it all! Today, I'm a professional Unity Developer (never thougth gamedev was a reality in my country back then), and the first spark of passion with it came from Rpg Maker.

Glad you mentioned prototyping. I made a 30 minute demo of my game in RPG Maker before porting to Godot. It made it so easy to form a vision for it.

So are you drawing all this doing all the art yourself?

I think a lot of beginners look at this then read that they’d be better with Godot or game maker or unity, give them a go and quit in a month. Not that you can’t learn with those, you absolutely can. But this is the easy training wheels one.

One that's a bit difficult to do in any RM, is a simulated board game. But I've seen it done.

I'm much more familiar with RPG Maker VX (which is what I started with) and RPG Maker VX Ace. I'm always totally amazed when I see videos like this with the quality of DIFFERENT animations and graphics!! Holy mackeral! Like, I'm only familiar with the basic "RPG" sprites from the first one, and my text boxes only have the head profiles. I would love to learn how to do some of those other animations (i.e. the tall sprites, for example), and the full body/half body text boxes (if possible in RPG Maker VX Ace of course). Just found your channel from this one video and I'll have to take a look at more!
Of course, I've just been having a blast with the basic "RPG" sprite looks for my games so far including the amount of awesome fan-made sprites/faces/etc. from the RPG Maker forums!

Also, its possible with some creativity to make an action rpg instead of turn based, you can create target shooting sections and ive even seen a racing game

rpg maker is amazing and if you can code you own stuff it really shines.

Depending on what I get either A switch or a Steam deck or a gamimg pc (though maybe not cuz we have too many laptops!) And I'm gonna start with a visual novel or a story driven game for my actual novel (still in development on Chapter II) and it's horror so. Well...

To be fair, when was the last time someone made an RPG with RPG Maker?

I have a question: Why are the games I make so big? I created seven scenes and plots, and used some plug-ins, but the size was actually 5G. I tried to delete some original files, and the total pixel assets I drew did not exceed 5mb. I would like to know. the root of the problem

Not sure if this counts, but in the older RPG Maker VX Ace I wanted to see if I could create a game that wasn’t an rpg at all and so I created a word game where you have a teacher that acts like Vanna White and reveals letters and students that will vanish with wrong letters and re-appear with multiple correct letters.
With the success of that I think just about anything is possible with good imagination.
