Which flavor of Linux Mint did you use? Cinnamon, Matte, or XFCE? Also, is it possible to wipe out the old operating system and just have Linux Mint on there? Just curious is all... :)

I'm surprised you ditched gnome / manjaro so quickly based on the keyboard position. I haven't tried yet but even with a cursory analysis I imagine that the keyboard won't show at the bottom because Gnomes dock is at the bottom. If you moved the dock to the side, or top, I assume the onboard keyboard would automatically change to the bottom for you. The advantage of using Gnome is that it's UI is tablet friendly, where as Mint's isn't.

Hi ! After last system update on my Tab 8 tablet, I received notifications that someone login on my online store, from Linux, although I did the login after restat. It's possible that they changed the system on the new update ? Fact is that I should login with Google, but instead, they required me to add email and password, which seems strange.

Thanks, Bob in the UK

Windoze tablets suck. I was lied to when I bought it, found out too late for a refund that the OS could NOT be removed. Now it's useless except as an offline media player at home.

Linux Mint: with a W10 theme and a few tweaks, noob users can't tell the difference... very good if your workes only use cloudapps to work, from a browser, for example. They really can't tell the difference, except for the login screen.

Seeing this 9 months later, glad you explored this, I have an old Windows 8 Intel Tablet with 1GB of ram, upgraded it to Windows 10, originally it was lighter than 8 but now it's terribly unsuable. Would love to make it useful again. Wonder if Linux Mint will work? Thanks for the content!

Thanks for the awesome video! Quick question: does Linux Mint extend the useful life of this 10 year old tablet? That would be the main benefit for replacing the operating system on this? Eg. Make it faster, more responsive, increase the software options

I've tried linux on x86 tablet. And to be honest, none of distros was mobile ready (out of the box). Sure, they are desktop systems, but preinstalled Windows 10 was the closest to mobile use - tablet mode, good on-screen keybobard, properly hibernating after sleep. It's a little strange that desktop systems are not so touch friendly, in mobile-first era.

thank you Thank You THANK YOU Chris!

I have a number of Win8/10 tablets, a barebones All-In-One, and two 2-in-1s that are memory and SDD challenged, so trying to keep using them (and updating them) is honestly more work than I care for. I've experimented periodically to try and find a distro that meets the requirements you've outlined. Unfortunately, my short-attention-span-itis kicks in after a few hours and I set them aside. Fortunately, you've shown me there is a way forward, and it uses my favorite "it just works" distro, Linux Mint.

the AIO and the tablet devices I have are Atom-based, and the 2-in-1s are Celeron-based. I understand it's pretty common to run into graphics-driver issues with Atom devices; fingers-crossed that I can find something that works. TBH, as long as the touchsreen+OSKbd works, I can live with 800x480 for 8" and 10" devices, as I don't play videos on them. Celerons are more Linux-friendly, and I have (Debian?) Linux running on one of them very well, albeit w/o touchscreen support.

many thanks (again) for this very relevant-to-me video, Chris. You've given me a reason to dust off some of my favorite antiques to see if they can find a place in my cargo shorts pockets!

The built-in cameras don't work but they didn't running Windows 10. Touch interface works surprisingly well at 150%

I tried Linux Mint on my x86 Surface and worked well enough but i eventually ended up using Kubuntu with a couple of small tweaks. Latest version of KDE Plasma (2.7.2) via PPA backports, Linux Surface kernel, Malit onscreen keyboard, Enable Wayland by default, change popup menu for full screen application picker and set some environment variables for touch to work properly in firefox.

Onboard got a "move key" in the top-right corner. I think it's for not letting the OS decide a thing or two. A bit odd to me to do it very differently and it's so perfect overall. I think I installed it on 4-5 devices.

Is the Linux Mint a Cinnamon edition? I've been trying different Linux distros for my Intel Atom Lenovo tablet and many of the Linux I've tried installing have issues... Esp to do with sound and touchscreen orientation. Zorin OS doesn't have sound, Linux Mint MATE edition does not rotate the touchscreen's orientation. Would Cinnamon not have the same issue? PeppermintOS was recommended for this low-powered tablet and I'm wondering if you've personally tried the OS on your machine? Would love to know your feedback Sir :)

I use Mint on my Surface 2017 (5). Overall works fine. Though I can't get my surface pen to work. Minor issue really as the pen on surface devices is so bad anyway. Bought mine originally to do art and the pen wobble is just too much.

A few years back, there was a distro called Ubuntu Gnome that's since been discontinued because Gnome is now the standard desktop for Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu Gnome installed on a Panasonic CF-H2 Rugged Tablet and touch screen works fine. I did install OnBoard because it's a nicer keyboard. Works fine and IS on the bottom.

I'm looking at getting a newer rugged tablet and since I use KDE Kubuntu Plasma, I'm going to try that first but not Plasma Mobile. I'll try the desktop version and install OnBoard. If I end up with Mint, that's fine. I've always liked Mint as it seems the most stable of distros meant for the end user rather than Linux enthusiasts.

Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it. Cinnamon or MATE?
