A question - now that Mozilla offers Firefox as a deb download package - would there be any issues in installing the latest Firefox in my local user account in Debian using Gdebi, uninstall FFESR and simply checking Mozilla for future updates?

There are just some software that I need that are only on Ubuntu's PPAs. Don't read that crapstain of an article. (It's not a bad article in general. I'm just telling the users that most things on Debian's website are written by neckbeards who just want to gatekeep Linux. People who would stick out like a sore thumb in public. But all in all, this article has a little bit of truth to it. You'll just need to learn to take things with a grain of salt for this sort of stuff, especially if it's on the Debian website.)

Oh, this sounds like I'll be staying on Mint. (crashed, ok well, broken, three distros by assuming repositories are quite interchangable between Ubuntu-based systems.)

I laugh, but I managed to break and uninstall Windows 95 back in the day regularly.

Problem with old tutorials, I've noticed, is that a lot of them have no obvious date stamps. Quite frustrating.

I've used Debian testing/sid for 11 years, starting with squeeze or wheezy, probably reinstalled once or twice when I was moving on to a different SSD. Did some mistakes in the beginnings - like installing nVidia drivers from their website, or custom-building a kernel every time a new one went out.

BTW I'm a bit disappointed with an outdated Arduino IDE 1.8.x in the repo, nah.

I just ran through my first ever Debian install today. No idea why it took me so long to take a look at it.

Every time I apt remove a package (not even autoremove), apt tells me that my entire DE (Xfce) and all its plugins are unneeded orphan dependencies that I should consider removing. It’s rather annoying, because it’s a big old block of text every single time I remove a single package, and none of it is orphaned packages.

No need to create FrankenDebian. Ubuntu has already done it so much better than you ever could.

Build your own OS from the kernel. Don't even wrestle with Debian.

But Debian is right, when it comes to new users like myself. I tried to install Debian12 and the installation was without problems. The problems came when I tried to install Nvidia drivers. it was impossible to get it right even though I followed the steps to the letter. I also tried not to set a admin password on the first install. When I followed the steps to change that, Debian crashed. It seems to be a very vulnerable OS.

When I was new to linux, I made the mistake of running the install script from the nvidia drivers pulled from their website. I can confirm folks, not a good idea.

Interms of getting the latest packages instead of building from source. Could just grab the nix package of it. Because nix packages tend to have the most recent versions of software.

There's a reason why flatpak exists. At some point they may want to address it in that article, but it's a good compromise for getting the latest end user applications running while leaving the stable base alone.

That's funny! About three hours ago i messed up a Debian install on btrfs. I think i forgot to create a directory and apparently didn't try to mount a volume on it, otherwise i should have noticed an error. But i'm pretty shure i added that to fstab. LMAO

Deb 12 is kinda buggy, though. You know, just little things like no wireless networking on LXQt......

Back in Debian 2.1 I mixed testing and Sid repos into my stable install and broke it badly. I managed to fix it by apt uninstalling almost everything and apt installing again from stable. It was incredibly educational and I learned the reasons for some of the things on this list.

I don't why I'm laughing at this, but knew someone who used to delete Windows by accident regularly. 😂

You should do a lxc/lxd vidoe soon!! I just got into lxc's. needed to spin up a VM for testing a single script that kept failing on my daily driver. So i tried a lxc and it feels like a nice halfway between a containerised "docker" system and a full fat VM install.
...
But me being a GUI fanboy is finding lxc's a bit hard to get me head around with out a shiny interface to help out ;-) .
