Sure, anyone can overcome in the situations given, but addictions are not an instance in time, but an ongoing medication to life’s pain. Unless there is a physical knife and family member in the room at all times, you’re going to fail bc you’ve trained yourself for years to fail. When the Bible says be renewed in your mind, it’s saying you can literally rewire your neural pathways. It’s actually very simple, but it’s definitely not easy.

The problem with this analogy is that addiction almost always masks itself as a lesser choice that seems oh so mundane. One small act won't hurt, will it? It is death by a thousand cuts or the frog in the kettle. Once we see it for what it is, we can begin to let go. But it takes honesty, community and the action steps of recovery to get there.

I've been struggling since I was 14 and now I'm 19. I'm able to go on decent streaks but once I don't pray or read the Bible I'm so weak to the devil's lies and I give in. I am 65, I professed Jesus 1st 40years ago. I was exposed as a child. I chose , as an adult, to live a secret life. I gained self control with the Bible. I had to finally admit that Ididnot love Jesus, He said , "if you love me , you Will keep my commandments". John Piper is absolutly right about us.

It really is as simple as self control and the willingness to obey God. This is what Jesus meant that the circumcision is not of the foreskin like in the old Testament but circumcision of the heart (Spirit). Plus when you're born again you are a follower of Christ (The Anointed) and as he was crucified in the flesh and on the 3rd day he rose again. We are to crucify our flesh by denying it all of the lusts in life and it's not meant to be easy. Take yourself out of situations that cause you to be around and tempted to lust and covet. Trust me, I struggle daily too but with God's help everyday, you can make major progress and be spiritually strong through the Word. It takes Discipline!
