its the exact same thing ive been saying for years. It always happens whenever a large group of people complain about a certain annoying game mechanic and then another group of people defend it with the "its realistic" argument. Well, guess what? that "realism" is coming at the cost of the game's enjoyability. Lets use gta 5 as an example, a game that many people claim to have one of the most realistic open worlds but in reality, the more you think about it, its far from realistic. In gta 5, you can cause the biggest mass shooting ever imaginable yet there are no repercussions story or gameplay wise outside of getting your weapons taken away after getting busted and freed. The game is designed that way because if it was realistic, it would be boring and annoying having to avoid life imprisonment in the game. Sure, gta 5's open world might be believable in terms of how it simulates a big city with people living in it but no way is it realistic, thats another thing. There's a difference between the words realistic and believable

The whole doc is amazing but this was my favourite part. I've been saying this since I got into gaming years ago and any dipshit brings up realism as an argument. Realism has no place in videogames unless it's the express purpose of the game (like Tarkov etc.)

This is the exact reason why we're seeing game comparison made of modern games, especially AAA games. There is always a few tests that are like shooting the water, or throwing a grenade in the water, Gaben was right all along, right from the very start.

I wish this was the mindset of most game developers, a time when innovation and improving the experience was the key to success, but today its only about money, deadlines and tricky methods to make the consumer addicted to buying.

Gabe is truly a magician. He was thinking game design when game design was still in its infancy and people were still figuring out what made games fun. Gabe however, already knew.

This is the thoughts of a novice game designer in 1996. His instinct was to make the game be fun to play. The problems in gaming isn't anything to do with gaming. The problem is the squeezed lemon economic model we live under. Megacorps are trying to beat juice out of lemons that have turned to dust 20 years ago instead of thinking of ways to improve.

Valve is one of the best companies they are interested in satisfied happy customers that are loyal. This is how you run a company thats customer focused

I have often talked with anyone who wil listen how annoyed I am that games don't seem to respond to your actions. Like how coming to a bandit camp as a level 1 nooblet and coming there decked out in legendary gear and having a reputation for destruction is the same exact experience: bandits mock you and try to kill you. Fuck no they would cower in fear because they know exactly who you are.

im the crazy guy who actually enjoys crazy amounts of realism in shooters and other games, but I can easily enjoy either type game

Honestly Gabe’s answer to the question is stupid. There is two kinds of realism. Of course someone doesnt want realism like having to eat, shit, work, clean your home in a fps game. But realistic weapons, gravity, that you can click on a microwave and the food explodes, that an engineer gets annoyed that you shut off the lights, stuff like this is realistic and FUN! Realism isn't good gameplay in and of itself, but it is the least likely to violate suspension of disbelief. It's a tradeoff that all games make to varying degrees. Also, when someone says "that isn't realistic" they usually mean "that's stupid".
