CORRECTIONS to some factual errors that were brought to our attention:
#12 SPRINGWOOD ESTATE - 1 square mile (not 1000)
#19 SCHUYLER MANSION - President Millard Fillmore married in 1858 (not William, not 1855)
I grew up just minutes from Olana State Historical site and toured the entire home before it was open to the public. I also picnicked at Clermont every July 4th and visited the Vanderbilt home and Springwood and Staatsburg many many times!
ОтветитьStaatsburgh isn’t the Catskills. It’s the next town after Hyde Park.
ОтветитьSpring Wood 1,000 Sq mile? Lol. Oops
ОтветитьWhy were these estates all donated to public bodies? Scary.
Ответитьyou skipped Helen Hayes house eventually bought by Rosir O'Donnell
ОтветитьI once visited Madame C J Walker who owned a mansion that was on the Hudson Valley. So what constitutes a mansion
ОтветитьNice to hear about a classical heritage that HAS NOT been torn down… 👍
ОтветитьYou missed. OSBOURN and Dicks castles in Garrison NY
ОтветитьThank you for this video look at Hudson Valley I am planning a trip there for 2024.😊
ОтветитьDon't use mwxhanical narration. It cheapens the video. The visuals are good, but the robotic delivery is very off-putting.
ОтветитьAlso as a railfan where the New York Central ran. The Hudson locomotives were one of the most well known steam engines to run.
ОтветитьThanks, that was interesting. I live in the area and have visited many of them, but now I want to see all of them.... Thanks, again.
ОтветитьIt’s crazy how they just left these houses to the US Governments
ОтветитьWhat a pity these beautiful homes aren’t filled with exemplary Families, instead of gifted to Trusts and. Councils.
ОтветитьLovely video--I'm glad to say I've been to most of those on your list and they're well worth a visit for anyone who loves historic architecture, decorative arts, and Hudson River scenery. There are two more mansions I'd like to mention: Lindenwald, in Kinderhook, the home of President Martin Van Buren; and Edgewater, in Barrytown, which used to be privately owned but was sold in 2018 to the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust and is now open to the public.
ОтветитьSCHMANCY my favorite site not only is the place gorgeous but you would not believe how many super stars musis and film stars famous luminaries live there esp in catskills the richest the famous even politiciand the presidents current past etc all live in catskills hudson valley cat mts r best kept secret in the usa summer winter fall so pretty
ОтветитьSuch beautiful land and houses❤
ОтветитьMinor mention was made of slavery in the Hudson Valley.
ОтветитьI was born and raised here and lived here my whole life. The fall is beautiful!!💜🌈💜Whats funny back in 1982 my first apartment I could see the Hudson River from every room my little apartment the walkway on the Hudson and Hudson River Bridge!! The walkway was just a rundown railroad bridge at the time. I had quite the view beautiful sunsets and my rent was even cheaper that the average rent at that time. A whopping $175 a month plus utilities!! I can only imagine what the charge now 2023! I grew up in Staatsburg, NewYork border Hyde Park. My grandmother bought house and land only 4 thousand dollars and my family build their houses there including my Dad. My High school was on road we lived called Franklin D. Roosevelt. My grandma remember Roosevelt drive down our road. She moved here from NJ in mid 1940s.
ОтветитьThis is very interesting and live West of Albany and have not visited yet any of these mansions, and now see we really should!
There are some more West of Albany as the Clark family owned the large mansion which they have been doing over now with donations and they charge a little for tours of the Hyde Park at Glimmerglass State Park. The Carter's own alot of land which now is a lovely are on the lake hear Cooperstown NH and this mansion sits high on a hill, they have various events during the Summer months, and the tours are very nice. It is a ''fifty'' room mansion. (Not sure if videos are allowed though, so guess, I am sure you always ask anyway?) This may be one more you would like to add to your documentaries.? They do have quite a history and the family also had much land in other countries as they had workers on their Jamaican lands, and they moved from England and Mr.Carter had a wife who would not move with him and later he re- married Fenimore Cooper's, brother's widow. In the end, the family made her leave once her husband passed and the young part of the family took over.
Forgot just where it fits in, but think at some point the Clark family are involved in living there or owning it also, but do not remember just how it fit in, or if it did? Would need to red up on this again. I have been there, but it was while ago.
Also, they have had people who have in the past mentioned seeing a glimpse of perhaps the spirit of Mr. Carter and other interesting stories too numerous to mention, Thank you for sharing these lovely historic mansions!
I visited Olana in 07. Beautiful up state.
ОтветитьYou missed fort crailo across the river from Schyler mansion
ОтветитьI went to bard college, which is at Annandale on Hudson. ❤
ОтветитьI have been to all the Hudson Valley Estates, and if nothing else the views are worth the trip.
ОтветитьThank you. The upper Hudson Valley is on the bucket list. We toured the lower section years.
ОтветитьThank you so much for this. Having grown up near Sunnyside and Lyndhurst, they were a part of my childhood. Riding on the trails through the Rockefeller estate was a cherished memory. So thankful for the preservation efforts so future generations can enjoy them. The Hudson Valley is truly unique.
ОтветитьThere's the Thomas Cole Historical Site in Catskill, NY. He was the inspiration for Frederick Church. Then there's the Bronck House in Coxsackie. Both are in Greene County, west side of the river.
ОтветитьNever new any of that about the Philipse Manor, the Glenview Mansion, nor the Van Cortlandt Manor in the Bronx! I was born and raised, and am still residing in Yonkers! I've passed by those buildings so many times in all my life, too. If this doesn't prove that I live under a rock, then idk what does. 😭
ОтветитьIsn't the Hudson Valley the birthplace of Sleepy Hollow? Lot of hauntings in upstate NY.
ОтветитьI grew up in the Hudson River Valley, an amazing place.
ОтветитьWe lived in westchester county when I grew up and my father was a huge history buff. I can’t count the times we drove up and down the Hudson River. I was married in the Catskills and for years my husband and our children took the same routes enjoying the views, the sights and the fabulous restaurants. It is somewhere you have to see!
ОтветитьYou will like this, I promise 🤭
ОтветитьI think Lyndhurst Mansion was used in 'Dark Shadows' as well.
ОтветитьHudson valley.
Definitely smash
I went to Riverdale Country School back when the River Campus was the Girl's School. It is down the road from Wave Hill and you can look out on the campus from Wave Hill.
ОтветитьWho would have guessed. A trip to New York could include such a great touring area. Thank you for information.
ОтветитьMy 7xs great-grandfather was the overseer of the Phillipsburg estate back in the mid 1700's. Didn't expect to see that estate in this video.
ОтветитьCan you do a tour of rented rooms like mine, it's done in the modern box style, it's about 10' by 12', luminaries such as myself have resided here.
ОтветитьCherry hill should have been over ten brouke
ОтветитьSkipped alot like Bannerman's Castle
ОтветитьEat the rich.
ОтветитьI used to live down the road from Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park and have fond childhood memories of having family picnics on their grounds. Too bad you didn't include Vassar College (my alma mater). It's just as gorgeous but doesn't really have any mansions as part of their campus like Bard.
ОтветитьI was just talking about some of the Mansions of the gilded age the other day. Today I stumbled upon your mini documentary on the Hudson valley mansions. I live in the Hudson valley and have visited a few of them but have certainly been inspired to search out a few more. Though it is in ruins, perhaps a mention of Untermyer Park would have been appropriate.
Also in Yonkers, its grandeur can still be seen and imagined.
Thanks for this video
This is strange. A watchable documentary in the age of closeup video selfies. He actually focusses the camera/imagery on the topic. subscribed. 🙂 Though one detects computer generated voice
ОтветитьLook into Tuxedo Park where NY's multi-millionaires lived in a gated community during the Gilded Age. Even now, it is rather exclusive.
ОтветитьMissing mansions of Nyack and tuxedo park. Probably because those mansions are still occupied.
ОтветитьI toured Montgomery Place when it was an open-to-the public house museum. It's a pity that has changed. How about a video on the mansions of Lenox, MA (called the inland Newport)?
ОтветитьAbsolutely breathtaking!
