Consider watching Hirogaru Sky Precure, just about to finish. It has a large grown-up fandom in Japan. It's a great example of Hopepunk in anime. Toei pours on the sakuga in this one, and it's available. Washio Takahashi created the metaseries 20 seasons ago, and his inspirations were... not any anime, but Dirty Harry, 48 Hours, and a Japanese live action motorcycle gang show. Hirogaru Sky's one of the best seasons, so it's a great place to start.

My Opinions for whoever cares.

10. Ever played stardew valley but wanted lotta more titties? you got it! (oh shit he made the same joke)
9. This serie is my love. I adore it and read ahead to see how it ends. (it hasnt yet) absolute must watch. tho recommend 18+ viewers due to themes shown.
8. another must watch. not only cause the artstyle is gorgeous, but also because wow they depicted Miyo's trauma so well. politics is so so. but it's okey-ish
7. this anime is crazy good and touches briefly on what Sousou no Frieren would go on and consolidate. Mortality. It's slow paced for a gag based anime. but knows how to pull you in and make you feel void when it hits you.
6. yeah i havent watched it either.
5. Holy. Shit. Aka Akasaka is nuts! the first episode is so fire it could be a movie on its own. not watching it is a crime against anime.
4. Kurosawa read Asimov, watched Astroboy and said "yeah. i can do better" and just went and did it.
3. Apothecary Diares is what Raven of the inner palace would be if the main character was Myne from Ascendance of a bookworm but without magic.

1. Ofc it would be Sousou no Frieren. this anime is so good. alternates moment of great emotion with silly gags in a very well thought out world. herenonwithstanding the absolute badassery of the few battle scenes. There is a reason if this anime shot up to #1 in MAL. it's phenomenal.

Frieren is my favorate too, my second is apothecary diary. the others I didn`t like (the ones that I watched, witch is half).

Heavenly delusion doesn't have enough manga material out yet to to another season. Volume 6 which just released in English ends around the same spot as the anime, and in Japan there is only 3-4 more volumes

I loved Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts. Lanteveldt felt like the Han Solo of the heroes, and my favorite character of the show.

The first slam dunk is so good. One of my fave anime/films of this year. I love it so much.

Weirdly enough my #2 of this year is Campfire Cooking. I was kind of hoping to see it here..
1. mega chill anime no drama at all.
2. super subverted isekai expectations like:
a) no harem and no females that are there for the sake of sex appeal.
b) no overpowered protagonist.

A fantastic list. Agree with all of it. I have yet to watch My Happy Marriage yet, due to not having my Netflix sub active at this time, but it's on the list to be binged the next time that I do reactivate the sub. I have seen everything else though and what an excellent year it was. XD

Frieren is personally my favorite of this year as well. That first episode made me tear up at the end, and I hardly knew anything about the hero. One of my favorite comments in the show was, "You know I had a dream about my wife last night," followed by Frieren's response was just so perfect. Those who have seen it know what I'm talking about. For those that haven't, watch the show, it's worth it. My Happy Marriage is a close second. It just hit well with me, and I loved it. The surprise anime of the year for me was Dark Gathering (which actually has the perfect title by the way). I saw it and said, "Eh, why not." What I ended up watching was a great horror anime that actually chilled me to the bone in some ways (Meatballs, man, the meatballs). It just hit another spot that I haven't had hit in a long while. I wouldn't recommend for the squeamish or those that don't like horror. But, if you're not and you do, WATCH IT!

Heavenly Delusion number 9? HERESY.

I had to put the line on platforms so I only have Crunchyroll, Netflix and HDive, sadly with Disney entering the Anime race, now you need to pay multiples platforms. I find that I missed on the Heavenly Illusions anime. It looked very good and was looking forward to it but I chose not to pay for Disney. And even HDIVE I am thinking to cancel, I watched it only for Oshi noko, Dark Gathering and the ridiculous Eminence of Shadow LOL. That one cracks me up.

Hot take: Glass Reflection is basically a Twin of CallMeCarson

I'm not sure I can get behind the sentiment "I'd rather watch than read" Apothecary Diaries. I think they do a fantastic job on the writing and translating for that series. I expect the show is faithful and good, but the LNs are really the tops. Probably the best series I've found so far in Japanese LNs.

Vinland Saga 2 not being on this list is odd, unless you're not including continuing anime. I forgot if that was one of you rules to your "best of the year" lists.

Your number 2 was unexpected to the point I literally didn't know it existed, and I wouldn't have watched it in a million years if it wasn't for your glowing recomendation so that's on my list now as well. As for your number 1... I'm so happy I just happened to watch this today, which means I can watch that other video right away. There's such a high chance it'll make me cry it's not even funny lol. That show is such an excellent case for the artistic value of anime as a medium over the source material it adapts... The story itself is wonderful, all the little details, and the way it builds up and hits you with themost beautiful soundtrack to fit the situation is "makes me happy laugh" ridiculous lol. Anyways imma go watch that real quick now, have a great 2024 sir!

I don't leave "negative" comments usually on serious videos, but 2023 was a crazy year for anime and your list almost made me believe it was a terrible year.

the lack of Vinland Saga mention, even in the comments, caused me to actually google whether or not it came out this year. am I in another dimension?? why isn't it here???

like, okay, I am not dissing any other anime that is here... but Vinland Saga has to be among them. I rate it at least as highly as Pluto, and I friggin LOVE Pluto. I know Vinland Saga came out earlier in the year, and a lot of the other heavy hitters are newer, but please. there is absolutely no reason for it to be absent.

No hell's paradise?

For My Happy Marriage , I recommend you to read the light novels because seriously they made me feel a completely different experience. The pacing in the light novels was perfect. Watching the anime disappointed me a great deal even though so many loved it.

No JJK S2 on the list is crazy

My two favorites are Kusuriya no Hitorigoto and Frieren, but I like Kusuriya slightly more because Maomao is such a great character. I feel like there's not much MC girls like her and Frieren, but also I like the fact she doesn't have stuff like magical powers or infinite strenght - but still being a master of plants and poison makes her deadly. She's intelligent but doesn't try to shine by getting a higher rank or being rich for example, she actually knows how to lay low so she can live a more peaceful life. I also feel more emotions watching it (and I love the fact she's usually smart and play it safe but still wants to drink poison badly for the lolz)

I won't deny Frieren is a masterpiece tho. I've read the manga when the first volume came out, and after reading the plot and a few pages I immediately thought "OMG this is a masterpiece! How the hell is this NOT trending yet? ... Oh I see, people don't know about it. An anime! If this manga gets an anime it will definitely takes the world by storm and even be in the top 3 of MAL! Maybe even 1st!" I still can't believe I was so right on lol

Waiting for the City Hunter remake at any moment....

I love the manga for both The Apothecary Diaries and Sacrificial Princess, so of course, I enjoyed the anime. I went into Frieren and Loving Yamada at Lv999 blind, as for Oshi no Ko and My Happy Marriage, I only knew the summary. So these six were my favorites in 2023

I was loving Heavenly Delusion until the ending. The narrative choice to have such a traumatizing thing happen to the character, and not be taken seriously enough, shifted my entire outlook on the series

Vinland Saga season 2 is my "Anime of the year" but that's not important.

The reason I'm saying this is because watching Vinland Saga weekly is the reason why I picked up Stardew Valley and I was obsessed, so much so that I didn't watch anything for 3 months straight and finished the game. Its so fascinating that we both picked up Stardew Valley around the same time for 2 different series altogether.

Anyways, you should catch up with Vinland Saga if you haven't already and yk get perfection in Stardew Valley if you have the time.

It's just a shame that Heavenly Delusion is so underrated.
All aspects of the show are objectively close to perfection.
I absolutely love Frieren and Apothecary, but I would never put them higher.
The first one feels like the best boring show with no focus on anything and nothing important going on. That is okay, but not the bext thing for the plot for sure.
While the second one has lot's of that anime cringy-designed moments which just ruin the atmosphere and are not fun at all. Moreover, the story itself is much more simple, regular and even boring at some points.
Non of that is the case with Heavenly delusion, plus the art srtyle is way more recognizable and pleasant to look at.
Feels like most people just need genious characters like Gojo, Frieren, that apothecary girl, etc. to be obsessed with an anime and rate it high enough.

The only show from your list that I've watched is Pluto. I loved how it was about the USA wars in the middle east with a big dash of revenge. The overall message is great. It would be great if Israel would watch it lol
