The death of the Old Attorney General himself is a story of a family coming together, told through inscriptions left in a Book of Common Prayer. Richard John Uniacke passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 77 in his bedroom at The Mount. His youngest son Andrew later recounts the death of his father: Richard John spent a large extent of his last 4 years at the Mount and when he died, nearly all of his surviving 11 children were present. It was their custom to stand on either side of his bedroom door and receive his blessing before he retired for the night. On a dreary night in October 1830, they received his last blessing. When he did not come for breakfast at his usual 9am, one of his sons went to check on their father and found that he had passed away in the night. This book was given to Richard John by his son Rev. Robert Fitzgerald and then found by him in his deceased father's room. "This book was given to me on Easter Sunday in the year of our Lord 1830 by my very dear son Robt Fitzgerald. Richd Jn, Uniacke. This book was taken by one from my dear Father's bedroom the day of his death the 11 day of October 1830 - and presented to my wife Elizabeth as a remembrance of one whom she felt the highest respect and affection. R. Fitzgerald Uniacke." Visit us to learn more about the treasures in the Uniacke Library.
