Hornets are so quick. My son got stung in the eye by a random hornet while he walked in the woods. Fortunately no ill effects but hurt like hell.

Beekeeping veil and/or suit would work for checking wood duck boxes. I know where you can find one. 😉

Before next spring when you clean out and reset those boxes. Go to Home Depot and get Hot Shot No-Pest Insect Killer Strip (2-Pack). Break the little hanger and cut the strips up into about 1 inch pieces. Staple them on the top inside of the box opposite of the clean out door. It will keep it clean of any bees, wasp, or wasp and doesn’t stop the wood ducks from nesting. I had 10 nesting boxes out and used the No-Pest Insect Killer Strips. All the boxes used successfully and like yours, some used multiple times.
