"The Administration of the Mint at Rome during the Reign of Trajan" Presented by Winthrop Professor John Melville-Jones.

Three inscriptions on statue bases set up to honour Trajan, and the probable identification of a building beneath the minor basilica of San Clemente in Rome, provide us with a great deal of information about the way in which Roman coins were produced at this time. It is also clear that the workers at the mint, who were imperial freedmen and slaves, had a moderately high status and were in a good financial position.
