Jack Campbell's "The Lost Fleet" is another brilliant military sci-fi series. It focuses on a fleet that slowly relearns old tactics and military practices after a century of war made discipline and honor redundant... Great stuff.

This is a great channel! I’m working on a rather grand narratological theory which has taken me several years longer than I’d first expected (since I’m retired and don’t need to make a living in this way, I might just never complete it—there’s always that risk at my age). Naturally I begin at the beginning and shorten retrospecultion the closer I reel it all in towards the ‘present history.’

But Science Fiction was always a significant part of the whole as I envisioned it—and I’m finally arriving at the point where I have to study it more closely to see, for example, if the technology-science world of today really knocks a million years of human narratological development (overt the years I’m inclined to include pre-Homo sapiens aspects of narratology that I hadn’t anticipated at outset) off its contiguous chain of custody or not. It’s a constant wrestling match with presentism, progressivism, dialecticism, and other prejudices of the past and present days (plus ça change…). Science fiction turns me front-way around toward the future and I suspect I will encounter a lot of retrospection recast—but hope to find elements supportive of the theory so far as it’s developed. Lord!—grant me another several years!!

Thnx. This is a great overview for me.

All the best,
Scotty

Shoulda elaborated on Dying Earth a little more. The title book is definitely Science Fantasy. Gene Wolfes Solar cycle a good example. Cities filled with towers that are actually docked space ships that have been out of commission for so long that no ones knows theyre space ships. aliens appear to be angels with alien tech that comes across as magic. People living in a space ship so long that they dont know what a planet is, dont realize theyre in space. "Digitized" people capable of possession and time travel being seen as spirits and gods, communixation video screens as holy relics for communicating stored intelligences of dead people, rogue intelligences manipulating physical word seen as saints/gods who priests sacrifice animals to

I fully agree Science Fantasy is an illegitimate child. It’s always treated like crap by wider Sci-Fi readers all because of how fantastical it is. Even though that’s what makes it spectacular. Like Godblight by Guy Hayley. Because it’s in a Warhammer 40K setting most I know are like “That’s dumb, ignorant and stupid”.

Yeah it is, but that’s what entertains people. There’s nothing wrong with reading something time to time that doesn’t make sense.

“Doesn’t make Sense” is Space Fantasy’s entire motto. Sorry about the Rant here, I hope I’m not wasting your time.

It almost sounds like the only qualifier for science fiction is fictional technology. Like, if you took a non sci-fi book like War and Peace and had a new character appear in a time machine, without changing anything else, to observe the action, the book would now be science fiction.

No, no no no no no no no, cyberpunk IS NOT about oppressive government/corps controlling people with tech. Absolutely not.

The key point of cyberpunk is and always was since hotel new rose(semi official first true cyberpunk piece of literature created by W. Gibson in 1976) a p o s t m o d e r n subgenre of sci-fi. And that means that the main point of cyberpunk as postmodern is shifting focus from the outside to the inside. In this case instead of asking something like "okay, we invented teleports, where will it take humankind?" or "okay, i created first true AI, what laws would mankind enforce on it to prevent the AI from rioting/hurting mankind" cyberpunk asks questions like "okay, mankind invented augmentation, how it would affect human mind, body, worldview and soul".

So now cyberpunk explores such ideas. That's why every true cyberpunk piece focuses on protagonist where possible. Neuromancer: the protagonist got too greedy and stole from somebody he shouldn't have, therefore they found him and burned his nerves so he can no longer use sim stim deck, his main source of income and passion. And neuromancer explores his mental state and what he's doing without his work tool.

And you can see it everywhere. Motoko Kusanagi wonders if she's even real person or may be she's a ghost of somebody. Later in the 1995 movie we explore the idea of transhumanism when Motoko merges her mind with a rogue ai who discovered consciousness. It all is tied to the core idea of cyberpunk pioneers.

Hell, even take cyberpunk 2020 as an example. Table top rpg. There's literally a stat that defines "how human" is your character. With installing upgrades after upgrades into your character, he/she/it becomes less human to the point your character loses humanity and becomes a psycho, that must be checked time to time and is capable of annihilating the entire military base solo. Yes, this stat is a form of ingame balance, but ties perfectly into the core idea of cyberpunk. And the funniest thing is that the main idea of cyberpunk 2020 is rule of cool. Style over substance. But despite that, 2020 is much more cyberpunk than any altered carbon ever will be.

Also, there are shamans in cyberpunk, which again, ties perfectly into the core idea. Because shaman as an archetype is a character, who can and does connect, understand and use spiritual/supernatural of any given universe. And what is spiritual/supernatural substitution in cyberpunk? Tech, ai, Internet. That's why there are cyber vodoo people, space rastaman people who worship ai and stuff like that. People in cyberpunk worship tech almost as religious cult. Not everywhere, but it is a common thing from neuromancer till latest deus ex game.

Tech is only a horizon. Back in 80s people thought that way, currently we think about different future and tech and it's influence. But the core of cyberpunk always applies.

That's what it is. And not dystopia in futuristic setting.

Also, ff7 is just science fantasy, NOT cyberpunk. Not even close. The best example of cyberpunk with "magic" is shadowrun universe.

I'm a baby Boomer who has read at least a thousand science fiction books. For the origins of Space Opera. I would say Doc EE Smith and his Lensman series. Also, I would divide Sci Fi into "Near Future" and "Far Future". Neal Asher's books would be considered "far future, space opera". Also, IMHO Andre Norton is Queen of the "Science /Fantasy genre. Thanks.
