At the time Dwarka and Madra were a small kingdoms compared to Hastinapur & Indraprastha.
Before the Mahabharat Yuddha, Salya had recenlty lost its terriotory to Hastinapur and desperately wanted its terriotory back while Dwarka wanted to be a big player in the Indian Subcontinent. They both conspired to create a feud bettwen Kauravs and Pandavs of course Gandar Naresh helped propell the war.

End of the war: Hastinapur & Indraprastha both significantly lost its military power & had to hand over the acquired land of Madra Kingdom back to them.
Krishna became a household name with Dwarka being new big player in the indian subcontinent.

Krishna being the epitome of shrewdness had bargaining chip on either side of Kaurava & Pandavs. Had Kauravs won the war he could have argued my army fought from your side & if pandavas side won could have argued I was always on your side.

This is my political take on the subject.

Ved Vyas ko book padh lijiye. Shakuni ka koi jada mistake nahi tha..He had no role in giving poison to Bhim, no role in Lakshagrih.. He initially requested Duryodhan not to do Dyut Krida.. He requested him not to be jealous of Pandavas.. Story of Shakuni mentioned here isn't in Mahabharat book of Ved Vyas.. Aap log believe nahi kroge muje pata hai

So the real reason is the injustice by Bhisma Pitama, he is the real reason for the demise of this family and Mahabharat. Who starves an entire clan ? After hearing this story I feel ashamed and embarrased. Ramanand Sagar did not reveal us this dirty truth about Bhisma Pitama. Shame on them both.

Well honestly Shakuni himself thrusted a dagger on his thigh when he got to know Gandhari, his beloved sister who was afraid of darkness, had to spend life wearing a blindfold, so that he never forgets the injustice happened to the Gandhars. Regarding his father's death, it happened long after the marriage, and his father died in Gandhaar, not in Hastinapur.

I knew this story long before. My grandmother used to tell these stories to me and my brother. The more I read these small stories of Mahabharata. The more I get inclined to believe that nothing is completely right or wrong. It's just us and our "Karm" that decides our destiny.
