I work in a fruit production facility where we have many natural flavours made with chemistry (Natural because they're made from edible ingredients found in nature, yay legal phrasing) n' when he was like "I had to see what it tastes like pure" I was like, oh no... They basically taste like rubbing alcohol mixed with perfumes n' they're absolutely disgustin' without dilution.

Low yields could be explained by your distillation methods, since chemicals distill parabolically across different temperatures. So if you switch distillation flasks right at the boiling point your substance will be pure, but you will lose some of your product due to it boiling at a lower temperature. Not much to really do about this sadly if you want a pure product
