Yes, it is a loop with a simple problem (not equation… those have equal signs)… This should be a mental math problem for older students especially. The step he used is actually quite helpful on questions you are not allowed to use a calculator on that deal with larger numbers. Math teacher out.

What I do is split it into two different parts, so 15 would turn into 10 and 5, then subtract 10-8=2, then add the 5 back to get 7

5-8= -3
-3+10=7

Just use a different way like this 8 plus 2 equals 10 so 5 plus 10 equals 15 sooooo….. 2 plus 5 equals 7, 7 is your answer
