My HEAVY ARMOR, HEALING COMPANION is a SAVAGE. It rarely ever dies during solo content and only in veteran content if he ever does. Azander is who I just finished leveling up and I use him now, but sharp was doing equally good in the same role. Sharp will be my tank now. (Yes he beats isobel. But just BARELY if he does). I have half Heavy-Soothing and Half Heavy-Bolstered (i think its called) for the extra health. And the 1 GOLD RING that has Quickened trait on it. My PURPLE-RESTO STAFF has extra Crit Chance trait on it. (Because that was the Purple I found). I do have Purple ice staff with increased damage but I dont want to taunt while he's healing so I use Resto. 6 PURPLE-HVY with Extra health and the rest PURP-HVY-SOOTHING would give me OVER 30,000 Damage Mitigation. That means how much damage doesnt get thru. W....T.....Heck???!!! I currently have half Purple and half Blue gear. Like I said, HE RARELY EVER DIES!!! He also gives me, AND 2 group members, damage shields, an AOE that boosts all of our resources by 150, and boosts our damage. He also puts reduction buffs on the enemy. He has a MASSIVE EMERGENCY HEAL for himself or me, when we get below 25% health, that bursts for about 20,000 health. And that can happen every 7 sec. or less if we need it. SO....He has big buffs/heals. He's tanky as heck so he almost NEVER dies. He has GREAT SHIELDS that quite often, almost cover my whole health bar. And Azander also gives us a chance to find RESEARCH FOLIOS in chests or urns etc. that have a chance to contain some valuable items, like furnishing plans or recipes or motifs etc. I strongly urge you to try this. I didnt want to tell it until I leveled up and got most of the PURPLE-HVY gear that I needed. People dont or haven't put much of a value on Hvy-Soothing gear yet, so u might find a good deal before everyone figures this out. To sum it up, WE can take care of the damage but having a friend there to save us in a pinch, as well as give us some shielding and some resources back, is a major bonus and in my opinion.......A huge No-Brainer. I would love to use Isobel because I love the idea of a scantily clad breton. Unfortunately, she doesn't care for thievery or murder so she doesn't mesh very well with my character.

Getting that on all pieces is another story though, been playing quite a while and am only halfway there and only greens and Blue's

Healer - soothing = bigger heals, quickened = more frequent heals. Given how dumb the AI is, and on your own self healing, you may find all/most quickened works better than soothing for you

Each companion has a unique passive that you get when they're out or if you have their keepsake/memento/whatever from doing their rapport quest.

Dum Dum Bastion; LMAO. I'm currently using him as a meat shield until I unlock Lady She-Knight of Badassery. He does his job well enough.
