Hello you do not know well of the History

The Christian Spaniards are the genetic descendents of the original builders of the structure when it was a pagan temple. After their descendents converted to Christianity, it was still in their possession and they converted it into a cathedral. The have simply retaken the structure they once held and may do with it what they wish.
