Cycling is practical, healty and cheap certainly in big cities. I hope USA also adopts the Amsterdam style)

I wonder why New Yorkers are so afraid of bike theft. Is there actually that much bike theft or is the risk just in their heads?
I'd think there's a much higher risk of bike theft in the Netherlands. There's plenty to take (some poorly locked up) and they re-sell them on Marktplaats.nl.
If you have a back wheel lock and put a heavy chain around the front wheel, frame and a lamppost/bike parking stand, the criminals would need a circular saw to steal it (and then still need to deal with the wheel lock).
